General Soukhomlinoff, once Russia’s war minister, was sentenced to hard labor for life for high treason in Petrograd. Madame Soukhomlinoff was acquitted. The verdict drew a mixed crowd from generals in bright uniforms to workers in plain clothes as the trial concluded.
Thomas Wiles and wife depart for the south by Missouri Pacific. They plan stops in Arkansas Kansas and Oklahoma visiting relatives including Loren Wiles in Little Rock and Mrs Charles Finch in Fayette. They aim to attend the Christian church convention in Kansas City from October 24 to 29 before returning home.
Rev. E. H. Pontius, pastor of the local United Brethren church, leaves Tuesday for York to take part in the annual conference. He has reported good progress in his ministry and local leaders hope he will be retained for another year.
John C Franks and his mother plan a winter exile to the sunny south for bluer skies and fewer storms. The son, formerly a barber, leaves after two weeks with A J Trinity. Jack Sternes of St Joseph takes over the Trinity shaving emporium while the mother visits a Kansas daughter.
A. L. Huffer, building a seven room home southwest of the city, reports progress on the house. John W. Kinser, the plasterer, expects to finish tomorrow, after which carpenters will finalize the interior. The dwelling features modern conveniences including a bath and furnace heat for Mr and Mrs Huffer.
Janet Snyder turned six with a party at the A. J. Snyder residence on Pearl street after school. Friends joined in games tea and a birthday lunch of ice cream cake fruit and candy. Guests included Maxine Cloide Mary Swatek Louvisa Albert Esther Cowles Fay Halstead Alice Ptak and the Snyder children Keith Dean and Theodore Cloide and Ptak.
L W Nelson south of the city purchased a new Reo from T L Amick. Nelson had managed with teams but switched to motor power for time savings and animal economy. John Rohrdanz near Manley also bought a new Reo to improve business efficiency and personal convenience.
Matthew Herold of the 169th regiment of infantry rose quickly from corporal to Mess Sergeant in charge of purchasing for a camp portion at Charlotte North Carolina. Friends commend his advancement and anticipate further promotions.
Daily Sam Smith reports Henry Soennichsen at Deming New Mexico cantonment sending a card praising the camp. He notes the place suits the boys well and that they are progressing with drilling and will need more training and instruction.
Mrs. Edmonds of Murray died from illness in Omaha last night about midnight. The remains will arrive in Murray this evening and the funeral is set for Thursday at 1 o clock, at the Murray church.
Frank H. Smith reports from Deming New Mexico that the Sixth Nebraska training camp at Camp Cody is largely finished with preparations. Plattsmouth men in Companies B D and E are stationed nearby with many others from the town in the Fourth regiment. The climate is agreeable, rains have compacted the sandy site, and no sickness has appeared among Plattsmouth troops.
Robert L. Propst left for Omaha and Council Bluffs to arrange buying a new threshing engine for his son Thayer in Ralston. Thayer has operated a small machine this season and plans a larger unit next summer in connection with his business. Propst said he is seeding 100 acres of wheat and prefers rain for planting.
The note promotes Chase county land where prices remain reasonable and urges readers to join Rosencrans on a Sunday evening trip to see genuine bargains in the locality.
Chief Barclay placed signs at High and Central school grounds and at the Catholic school. The signs warn drivers to slow down near schools and reinforce existing laws on auto speed passing these areas.
Carl Kunsman assists with yesterday’s barrels at the local ice plant when a barrel slipped and mashed his hand against a brick wall. He will be unable to use the hand for some time.
Sergeant J Wolf of Alcatraz Island San Francisco departs for Salt Lake City to pick up two deserters and escort them to Fort Douglas California for trial. He with four guards recently brought five prisoners to Fort Leavenworth from Fort Douglas and stopped in for a short visit.
Fred Wagner proprietor of the Wagner Restaurant received a letter from the Navy Recruiting Officer at Omaha requesting him to enlist as a cook for Navy service. The Navy seeks cooks for ships in service offering pay from 35 to 85 dollars a month plus board and promotion opportunities. Interested individuals should apply to Mr. Wagner at the restaurant.
Daily report states W. W. Wasley received a carload of Chevrolet automobiles yesterday and unloaded them for sale to satisfied buyers. All but one were standard size. one Big Four model stands out as a desirable purchase.
Edward Wevgrich Harry Schaefer and Charles Hennings of Randolph Neb motored to Cedar Creek for a visit and were joined by Elmer Schaefer of Cedar Creek. They stopped in Plattsmouth to renew the Plattsmouth Journal subscription for George B Weyrich of Randolph for another year.
Messrs. R. R. Elliottel and A. M. Elliott of St. Joseph Missouri arrive in Plattsmouth with their mother Mrs. Lydia Elliott and sister Miss Myrtle Elliott to visit Rev. H. G. McClusky and family and attend to business in the city.
Reports from an Atlantic port describe two German submarines sunk by destroyers after torpedo attacks on a transport and a steamship. One U-boat was hit during a night engagement off the Irish coast and sunk, while the second vessel was also destroyed following a surface engagement, with sailors seen in the water and rescue efforts noted.
A simple 11:99 morning ceremony at the Presbyterian Manse united Miss Maurine Hughes and Mr. Ralph B. Eliott of St. Joseph Missouri. Two brothers in law ministers officiated with Van Dyke ring and music by Myrtle Elliott. Guests included relatives and out of town visitors from St. Joseph Manning and Omaha. The couple plans to reside in St. Joseph as Mr. Elliott works for Swift Packing Co.
The Christian Endeavor society of the Presbyterian church invites all members to a first fall business meeting at eight tonight. President G R Rawls has called the gathering at D C Morgan’s home to plan winter activities and ensure the society’s success.
Miss Emma Meyers long engaged in local millinery work arrived last evening after a summer spent visiting several places in Kansas. She will stay a while with friends and is currently guest of Mrs. Frank J. Morgan in this city.
The De Luxe Dancing Club and the Holy Orchestra announce the hiring of Mr. Wm Hearthington and pianist Mr. Freneis Whelan. Hearthington, longtime director at Omahu Orchestral School, is noted as a top Omaha violinist. The duo will perform at the Cosmopolitan Dance on Saturday night, September 29.
A Tuesday gathering at the country home of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Wites produced a joyful family reunion. Guests from multiple towns including Glenwood, Louisville, Murray, Weeping Water, and Murray attended with children and grandchildren surrounded by socializing, a bountiful noon meal, and a group photograph by Roysouth, Photographer of the city.
County Judge Beeson and Attorney Rawls travel to Red Oak Iowa to hear attorney Mitchell present the arguments in the case of Rev Lynn J G Kelly charged with eight murders in Villisca in 1912. Mitchell is hailed as one of the ablest lawyers for delivering the legal points guiding Cass county in the trial.
W F Gillespie departed Sunday evening for Rochester Minnesota to consult the Mayo Brothers sanitarium specialist about his health. He has suffered poor health for some time and after trying many remedies and doctors hopes for help in regaining his health.

Ben Hankinson rents the former Hawrick space on Lower Main street to use as a sorting room and storage for separated junk. He will continue in the junk business and keep other grades in a separate lot as before.
