Four year old Richard Hatt dodged a fatal fate when Ben Wiles swerved to avoid him as he darted from a Hart street parked car. The auto struck the boy lightly on the side and head. Wiles was blameless and credited with preventing worse harm as spectators gathered.
A Burlington meeting with county city officials and residents reviewed how to handle workers at the Burlington shops who gain more freedom to come and go. Rail officials reported about 100 men desire freedom from yard confinement, while authorities praised orderly conduct and avoided immediate changes, noting potential shifts in a few weeks if the strike remains unsettled.
Real estate man Frank Vallery, with J W Chilton, reports several late deals. They sold a 2010 acre ranch in Arthur county to Gus Myers of Weeping Water for low land and city property, plus 480 acres to D G Williams Arthur county clerk including a residence and three acre tract in Plattsmouth. Ed S Tutt of Murray closed on land near a top bass lake in Arthur county, a purchase that greatly pleases him.
Captain and Mrs. Floyd Harding, long stationed at Camp Lewis Washington, visit Falls City before moving to Camp Bennington near Columbus Georgia where Captain Harding will be stationed. They stayed with Mrs. Harding sisters Mesdames G. H. Falter and J. W. Falter and were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. John Falter.
Mr and Mrs F W Notting and daughters Kace and Ellen Mrs Katherine Notting and Mrs Will Notting returned from Norfolk Monday where they stayed with Mr and Mrs Henry Wendt. The Wendts are aunt and uncle of Mrs F W Notting and Mr and Mrs August Steppart of Carlock. The visit was enjoyed by all. Grace and Ellen were house guests of Miss Lena Pohlmaan of Pierce Neb Saturday and Sunday.
J A Shaffer a 62 year old Alvo druggist died at his home Tuesday night after a long heart illness. Survived by his wife and one son C W Shaffer of Fort Worth Texas a brother Ned Shafer of Denver and two sisters Mrs William Chumeld and Mrs John Gorman of Illinois. He was a schoolmate of Eli Manspeaker in Bedford Pa and longtime Cass County resident.
James Thomas of Omaha a salesman for United States Rubber Company says he may sue for damages after an incident in Nehawka and Nebraska City where state deputy sheriff William Grebe allegedly slapped him to a car and fined him $1 and costs. Thomas claims the evidence was faulty and intends to prosecute in court.
Robert Cohen described Otoe and Cass county dirt roads as the best after a 3,000 mile eastward trip from Canton Ohio to Niagara Falls New York. He noted eastern highways were more common while Iowa roads were poor and praised Nebraska roads for their condition despite daylong rain and mud.
Raymond Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Smith, who had been in Omaha for several weeks receiving treatment for an injured hip, returned home yesterday to remain for a short time. He still has a cast on the limb and uses crutches to move around, hoping soon to regain full use.

Secretary Leo Stuhr of the Nebraska Department of Agriculture created a 2 543 acre state game reserve and bird refuge on the Fontanelle tract between South Omaha and Bellevue. The land will remain natural, with Scouts and other groups allowed camps under strict plant and wildlife protection rules.
The Weeping Water boosters with their band visited yesterday to promote the Cass County Fair set for September 28 to 30. The event marks a revival of county fairs after years with no activity and aims to provide a premier livestock exposition in the region.
Yesterday afternoon at the office of County Judge Allen J. Reeson the marriage of Miss Bessie Kearns and Mr. Harold E. Lockhart occurred in a quiet ceremony. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Buffington, the latter a sister of the bride. Both families reside in the city. the bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Kearns.
Yesterday afternoon Braughan Stephenson and Miss Jean Ray both of Omaha were married at the office of County Judge Beeson in the judge's usual accommodating manner.
A crowd from the Grant area gathered near Venango on a recent Sunday for a family style supper at Warren Wiley’s home. Attendees included Warren Wiley and his family Lloyd Gepen and family from Palisade James Mrasch Major Hail Rex Young L. H. Puls and family John Retke from Grant with Al Barnett Jasper Queen from Merray and Raymond Hild from Mynard.
The Wiles family reunion drew 250 members to Weeping Water's city park for a day of picnic meals, program talks by Afsyor Troy Davis and Mrs. Charles Finch, and musical selections. Officers Ray Wiles, Luke L. Wiles, and Thomas Wiles were re elected, with next year planned for Plattsmouth. Attendees hailed from Omaha, Nebraska City, Syracuse, Greenwood, and Tabor as county ties were celebrated.
Mrs S Peter Madsen born in Pet erdof Fehmarn Germany March 26 1851 married July 7 1875 to Mr Medsen. She moved to Plattsmouth Nebraska in 1884 joining the family in 1585. After fifteen years as a confirmed invalid she died August 23 at her Plattsmouth home. Funeral at St Pauls Evangelical church August 26 Oak Hill cemetery. She leaves husband five children and one sister.
Ike Pearlman retired capitalist and former Plattsmouth resident died yesterday at Colorado Springs after a period of ill health. He leaves a wife two sons Ike and Will in Omaha and a daughter in Sedalia Missouri. Old friends in the community extend sympathy.
Mr and Mrs 0 M Streight of this city received word from their son Harold Streicht of Oelwein Ta that his wife was taken to the hospital in their home city for an appendicitis operation and was recovering nicely.
A meeting led by Jas. B. Hart of the state banking board reviews a plan to settle a 376,600 irregularity in the Living ston Loan and Building association. Fricke provides property and assets valued to raise about 45,000 for a settlement to protect investors. The aim is to recover most funds through the association’s profits and avoid full receivership.
Lincoln August 20 The Democratic state central committee chairmen authorize the state convention to name an executive committee of twenty two. The slate includes fifteen men and seven women led by J S McCarty and C J Campbell with members from Omaha Lincoln Hastings Grand Island and other cities.
Werner Seidlitz and Rebecca E. Marquett both of Plattsmouth were married in Omaha on Thursday afternoon. The couple are well known locally where they have resided for years.
Miss Dorothy Gray and Miss Clara Brewster arrived for a brief visit at the E. H. Wescott home. They will dine with Grace and Virginia Beeson and are joined by Ruth Shannon Alice Louise Helen Wescott Virginia Beeson Janet Bajeck, all former Camp Brewster attendees.
At the Glen Perry home south of town the Order of the Eastern Star held a family picnic last evening. Members and relatives enjoyed a delightful dinner on the large lawn in pleasant, informal surroundings before parting as the gathering ended.
City tennis fans gathered at James Kuykendall's office to set the first round schedule for the Fortcombe tournament. Twenty seven matches are planned with two vacancies open for entrants. players may contact Ray Larson or Rev John Calvert to join. Matches aim to start by Wednesday at either Larson or Kuykendall courts.
Edward M. Wellman, grand master of the Nebraska Grand Lodge F and A M and a longtime Omaha attorney, died Thursday afternoon after an operation. He was 32d degree Mason, past master of Nebraska Lodge No. 1, and a Knight Templar. Survived by wife Kia Cook, two sons Phillip and Edward, and daughter Mrs Gene Vaughan, Wellman was educated at Michigan Law School and lived at 2110 South Thirty-third Street. He was highly regarded by peers and called a “Wonderful Man” for his kindness and integrity.
Slater Missouri August 21 five men were arrested for alleged interfering with the mails. The detainees are Leo F Winkle Barney Marfield J W Nichols Emmett Todd and E L Johnson. They were taken to Kansas City after arrest. Todd allegedly acted as a go between for Winkle to craft members.
