Retires After 39 Years of Cigar Business in Plattsmouth
This morning the cigar store and factory of Herman Spies closed for the final time after thirty nine years. Spies arrived in 1873, later built on Main Street and launched his own cigars. He never missed a workday except for a rest from a lifelong labor, plans a Pacific coast trip, and may relocate. He will spend a week closing affairs before leaving Plattsmouth to seek a healthier climate and potential new location.

The 102nd anniversary of the order’s founding was observed in Omaha with Nebraska members of the I O O F. Five ladies and two gentlemen received grand decorations the first public ceremony of its kind in Nebraska. Honorees include Mesdames Martha J. Petersen Susie E. Bates Plattsmouth and others from Florence Omaha and Fremont. Mayor Ed P. Smith and Senator W. B. Hoagland spoke on fraternal values, followed by a military ball and a braiding of the May pole.

Two Louisville high school students Misses Clara Haddon and Rala Edgerton took a joy ride in Robfin Coon’s car using a hairpin to unlock it. They rode toward Manley before the steering failed and the vehicle overturned on the highway. They were shaken and bruised but not seriously hurt, then taken to Louisville by farmer William Wendt who reports they will avoid using autos for travel.

Wolves and Coyotes Counted in County Scalps Trade
County Clerk George R. Sayles office turned into a livestock exchange as residents delivered coyote scalps and five wolf pups. Fred Rutherford found five wolf pups on his farm while William Neumann brought eight coyote scalps for a $3 reward. Other collectors included John Gauer eleven coyotes, W C Troop six, and A B Fornoff seven. In April fifty nine scalps were paid.

Woman Suffers Fractured Arm After Stairway Fall
Mrs W A Rouse of the old Champan property on Chicago Avenue fell while descending stairs Saturday evening. She injured her rishi arm and sustained severe bruises and other injuries. The exact cause is unclear as her last memory is stepping onto the first step before tumbling the full flight. Medical help arrived promptly and the fracture was set. She remains in pain and is resting as best as possible.
