Judge Jessen spoke to the Young Men's Bible Class at the M. E. church on "The Young Man and His Politics." The address was nonpartisan, filled with practical ideas for young men entering political life, and attendees called it a top note speech.
A horse saved its mate from drowning after both tumbled into a deep, fast river hole near Henton on the Iowa side. The driver freed the scraper, enabling the rescued horse to reach dry land and drag its companion from the water. The Eight Mile Grove Sunday school plans a box social at Woodmen hall Mynard on Saturday evening May 4. Everyone is invited and the ladies are asked to bring boxes.
The Turner art exhibit drew strong patronage Saturday with both afternoon and evening sessions. Fourth graders Ruby Edgerton and Cecilia Kalasek won spelling contests. Waldemar Soennichsen won the sixth grade mental arithmetic. An addressed talk by Mrs. Grigger of Omaha highlighted the program, though limited advance notice reduced publicity. Spelling contests for higher grades postponed to Tuesday evening at the high school with a varied musical program to follow.
The city council held a special session Monday night to rule on a remonstrance against Adolph Giese’s saloon license. After a tense debate over petition validity and witness questions, the council vote ended five to five and Mayor Gering cast the deciding vote in favor. Mae Murphy served as remonstrators’ stenographer. The proceedings included challenges to notices, freeholder status, and clerk records.
P M Meisinger and Henry Baker, formerly Cedar Creek merchants, report strong patronage after arriving from Benson to continue general merchandising. Meisinger plans a return visit to his parents before rejoining the Benson trade. A.S. Will, returning from a Colorado ranch, plans to start building a new modern residence on Chicago Avenue with architect McDonald of Omaha to draw plans.
Mr Sulk imposes technicalities to defeat a license but the mayor and council record objections. Geise wins license after district court appeal. A large council chamber crowd claps as decision is announced.
As we go to press, it is reported that Mrs. Giese’s license was refused by the district court. The decision marks a setback in her ongoing legal matter and could affect subsequent proceedings.
Washington reports rural delivery carriers in Cass county will receive increased pay after July 1 as the law raises the maximum yearly compensation and a congressional appropriation adds funding. Fourth Assistant Postmaster General De Graw approved a graded increase from 4 to 25 percent based on miles traveled, with routes of 8 to 22 miles showing specified increments. The overhaul, approved by Postmaster General Meyer, aims at nearly 35 million dollars in rural service expenditure next fiscal year.
The home of Mr. and Mrs. XN. H. Isbell in West Plattsmouth hosted a surprise silver wedding celebration last Sunday. About thirty friends arrived with baskets of seasonal delicacies to mark the occasion. Gifts were presented to the host and hostess as guests extended best wishes for many more happy years together.
Nehawka Register reports John L. Smith carried water from a spring ten rods away for seventeen years before digging a well. After drilling through rock he reached an abundant water supply at twenty seven feet. He estimates travel distance at four trips daily averaging one mile each year totaling 1541 miles over 17 years.
Key West patrolman Rolland Curry credits Chamberlain's Pain Balm with ending over two years of rheumatic pain. He reports rapid relief at night and no recurrence for more than three months after two weeks of use. Sold by F. G. Fricke and A. T. Fried.
The arrest of Judge A N Sullivan for violating the anti pass law draws sharp comment from legal circles in the state. A letter from E F Wathen in Nebraska City questions motives and urges Sullivan to keep a stout heart while awaiting the State vs Sullivan disposition.
County Superintendent J. W. Gamble presents a year end tally from all county districts except Plattsmouth. It lists money raised and materials secured by teachers and students including library books, dictionaries, maps, window shades, bells, mirrors and other classroom items, totaling 1238.40 in this year’s drive.
A social dance at Coates Hall last night honored Miss Marjorie Agnew who left today for California where her mother resides. Many young people attended to express regret at her departure, noting her leadership in Flatmouth social circles during several months.
A southern neighbor reports the Elks plan a large gathering tomorrow night with new members to receive degrees. Invitations have been sent to lodges in Omaha Plattsmouth Lincoln and other places to attend and assist in the work.
