Rural Route Carriers to Get Higher Pay July First

Washington reports rural delivery carriers in Cass county will receive increased pay after July 1 as the law raises the maximum yearly compensation and a congressional appropriation adds funding. Fourth Assistant Postmaster General De Graw approved a graded increase from 4 to 25 percent based on miles traveled, with routes of 8 to 22 miles showing specified increments. The overhaul, approved by Postmaster General Meyer, aims at nearly 35 million dollars in rural service expenditure next fiscal year.

Man Drains Spring Then Digs Well After Seventeen Years

Nehawka Register reports John L. Smith carried water from a spring ten rods away for seventeen years before digging a well. After drilling through rock he reached an abundant water supply at twenty seven feet. He estimates travel distance at four trips daily averaging one mile each year totaling 1541 miles over 17 years.
