Spray timing for codling moth in orchards

About half of overwintering codling moth larvae have become moths and egg laying is rapid. A second cover spray for the first brood is advised late this week, with a possible third spray ten days after the second in heavy worm areas. Use lead arsenate 1% to 50 gallons.

CASS COUNTY EXTENSION ADVISES ON FRUIT SPRAY PRACTICES

D. D. Wain Scott and J. H. Baldwin advise growers to skip fungicide this year unless prior years showed black rot or biotch. If needed, Bordeaux 2-4-50 is recommended. Emphasize thorough spraying, especially tops of trees, since 70 percent of worm damage occurs in the upper third. Use high pressure but avoid close nozzle placement to prevent russetting.
