Herman Frederick 23, of Nebraska City, died at St. Catherine's hospital Omaha at 2 15 am following injuries from July 3 crash with a Missouri Pacific bus. His family was at his bedside. other car occupants are recovering.
Father Marcelles Agius departs by Missouri Pacific train to St. Louis then sails from New York on the Comte De Sevne to Naples. He will travel to Malta to rest and regain health at his sister’s home, with friends wishing him a successful voyage and recovery.
Mr and Mrs C D Palmer, Charlotte and John with Mr and Mrs Earle Koebel of Omaha depart midweek for California. They plan to settle in the Sacramento valley and make their future home. Friends here regret their long time residence. Mrs Earle Koebel was formerly Viva Palmer of the Journal staff.
The children of Edward H. Krug express gratitude to friends and neighbors for support at his death and burial. Special thanks to the children's choir, car donors, home visitors, and flower senders from the families of Frank Mullen Marion Krue and John Krue.
The children of John Sedgway express deep gratitude for acts of kindness and sympathy. They thank friends neighbors and all who attended the funeral and sent flowers noting these deeds will be long remembered.
The board of education reports the resignation of Miss Evelyn Ripa a commercial department teacher at Plattsmouth High School She was elected for the coming term but chose a teaching position in her hometown Wilber Board and patrons regret her departure yet are pleased she will return to her old home to teach.
Cass county residents join free Learn to Swim sessions sponsored by the Cass county Red Cross for a sixth year. Instruction runs July 5-11 at Graham mill pool, July 12-18 at Merritt Beach and Plattsmouth, and July 19-25 at Lake Park South Bend with 17 town classes and buses transporting youngsters to lakes. Loren Hnizda of Lincoln leads the instruction with lifeguard teams at each pool. county chairman is Mrs. Ray Norris.
Plattsmouth Merchants show a .319 team batting average with eight players over 200. Joe Phillips leads with .407, Thimgan .366, Ault .361, and Ault has 17 hits while O’Donnell has 15. O’Donnell has three home runs along with Ault Phillips Sedlak and Thierolf each with one. Ed Smith and B Smith pace scoring with 14 and 12 respectively.
Frances Willard Centennary Memorial set for Tuesday afternoon July 11 in the Fellowship room of the Presbyterian church. Marie Berry-Bredbech of Omaha will read Pioneer Girl and Marie Lee Seibert will speak on Frances Willard with musical numbers. A social half hour with refreshments follows.
Mrs Rae F Patterson returns to Plattsmouth after almost three months traveling the west coast. She toured Denver Monterey Carmel Santa Barbara Los Angeles Oakland and Alameda with Miss Carolyn Barkalow visiting Rae's sister Mrs Charles King and Rae's son Edward Patterson and grandson Michael Jeffery born May 26 1939. They viewed the Painted Desert Petrified Forest Boulder Dam and enjoyed a San Francisco World’s Fair trip and a Mexico visit before returning to Plattsmouth on June 26.
The Loup River Public Power district filed for a restraining order against Carrie Schafer Otto Schafer and Otto V Hell to stop interference with its agents in building a transmission line through the west half of the southeast quarter of section 32 township 12 range 11 southwest of Louisville. Judge W W Wilson will hear the case in district court on Wednesday July 12.
Mr and Mrs E J Richey and Mrs J L Eley spent the Fourth of July with the John V Beveridge family in Tulsa Oklahoma Mrs Beveridge is a sister of Mrs Richey and Mrs Eley Mr Richey notes corn in Oklahoma and southern Kansas silking out and best seen in years and grass growth on ranges with many fine cattle along the route
Mrs. John L. Tidball and son John Tidball III leave Friday for Evanston Illinois to visit Mr. and Mrs. Carter Strand formerly Miss Ruth Tidball. They plan sightseeing in Illinois and Wisconsin before returning home.
Gary Lee and Kenneth Hilt underwent tonsil ectomy operations at 6 30 this morning in a local physician's office. Both boys recovered well after the procedures and were joined by their parents Mr and Mrs Ralph Hilt during the operations.
Mr and Mrs Thomas Short of Davenport Iowa and their son Robert spent Wednesday evening and Thursday morning in the city. They called at Mrs R A Bates and at Sanford Short homes after visiting Mr Short's father in Omaha. They departed this afternoon for LeMars Iowa to visit Mrs Short's relatives.
Oscar Gapen Jr 37 a Plattsmouth resident died this morning just before 11 after being stung by a wasp while working on the Missouri river improvement project near Fort Calhoun He collapsed at a physician office and died shortly after The death comes as a shock to his family he was survived by his wife two young children his parents and four sisters including Mrs Guy Wiles Mrs Otto Marek Mrs Glen Lockhart and Miss Helene Gapen The former Miss Errilla Stoehr was his wife
Friday evening the third convoy of gasoline tank barges moved from Kansas City to Omaha under St. Louis Socony guidance. The four barges rode a powerful vessel, mastering the river current with speed and ease, surpassing the Kansas City Second in size and capacity.
Mrs Lou Lindley, sister of Mrs Catherine Perry of Murray, died in Snow Camp North Carolina on June 22 at age 97. Her birthday would have been July 2. Mrs Perry now sole survivor of her immediate family. Funeral services and interment held in North Carolina.
$2 000 settlement approved in district court at Omaha for Charles Palmer who was injured October 5 1937 while slinging a sledge. Palmer of Burlington Refrigerator Express Co at their local shops claimed partial disability. He has received $1 290 temporary disability and $1 084 for medical and hospital bills. Home Dairy milk Unanimously U K'd by an army of users.
George Conis, a 21 year member and active Legion worker, was elected commander of the Plattsmouth post succeeding E. G. Ofe. The meeting at Holly's Cabin also named vice commanders from Army and Navy, announced executive appointees, and praised Conis's long service and wartime contributions including financing part of the original colors.
At the St Pauls church basement a lunch event is held Wednesday July 12 starting at 5 pm. The menu includes potato salad baked beans country ham sandwich chicken sandwich cake ice cream pie coffee and lemonade. Each item five cents.
A number of Legionnaires recently located or visiting will attend the Legion meeting and officer election at Holly's cabin on the Platte. Commander D. C Huffman of Louisville post may attend with one or two others. Cars depart the Legion building at 7 16.
Henry J. Knabe 78 lifelong Nehawka resident died Thursday night at Otoe Nebraska hospital from an acute heart attack after years of illness. Born May 7, 1861, he married Louisia Heebner in 1887 and left two surviving children Florence Lorena and Edward John Knabe. Funeral Sunday 2 30 p m at the late home with Porter Funeral Home in charge. Burial at St John’s Cemetery northwest of Nehawka.
James Earl Mason seven month old son of Mr and Mrs Glen Mason died at University hospital after pneumonia since one month old. Survived by parents two brothers grandmother and several uncles and cousins in this city. Funeral held at Sattler funeral home conducted by Elder Claude Carter. Musicians Mary May Carter and Lois Troop Bestor performed. Interment at Osk Hill cemetery.
At the Plattsmouth public library board meeting on Wednesday July 5, the librarian Miss Olive Jones was instructed to spend 150 dollars on new books to be added to the shelves. Purchases will be made between now and October 1 to be ready for fall work.
Mrs. George K. Hetrick reports the birth Friday morning in Concordia Kansas of a fine little son to Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Culley. Mrs. Culley is formerly Elaine Walden sister of Charles and June Walden and well known here as a frequent visitor.
William Highfield a 58 year old Iowa Nebraska Light and Power Co. employee died after his leg struck a guy wire on a live 6600 volt line near Murray and Nehawka while repairing storm damage. He died at the scene after attempts at resuscitation by fellow workers and doctors. He is survived by his wife Ruth two daughters and three sons. Funeral services are set for Tuesday at Horton funeral home.
Mr and Mrs George W Towle of Los Angeles touring their old Weeping Water home with Mr and Mrs Thede Davis. The group visited the courthouse and made pleasant calls at the Journal during their stay.
Arthur Varga enjoys a visit at St. Louis and vicinity with relatives. He sees his grandmother Mrs. FP Langhorst and his uncles and aunts, marking his first trip to the city since childhood.
Friday report notes Chief Barkley George Conis new American Legion commander City Treasurer M D Brown E A Wurl and William Schmidtmann Jr visiting Omaha. They called on Henry F Goos at Clarkson hospital and EB H Schulhot at St Josephs hospital.
Charles J. McDonald of Omaha is reappointed district deputy by State Deputy Richard A. Daugherty of Kearney. He has served the past year across the first district council at Omaha Plattsmouth West Point and Fremont.
