Coal use and carload growth at Burlington railroad
The Burlington uses 130 000 to 140 000 tons of coal monthly or 1 560 000 to 1 680 000 tons annually. Prices rose 50 to 75 cents per ton, increasing railroad operating costs. Coal comes from Sheridan Wyoming and local mines with distribution centered in Lincoln, Sheridan and Denver. Large coal yard equipped locomotives and multi‑ton tenders streamlined operations. A social item notes Mr and Mrs Simons of Chicago visiting, hosted by Mr and Mrs Thrall with Miss May Daugherty performing.
