Reports to R. G. Don and Co. show 11,092 business failures in 1901 with 113,092,376 dollars in liabilities. Banking and fiduciary insolvencies total 74 cases involving 108,008,774 dollars, bringing overall defaults to 11,076 and liabilities to 131,111,150 dollars.

William J. Work a night mail clerk at St Paul post office was arrested on a charge of stealing money from letters. Charles F. Gammon of the American Bible Society reports from Shanghai that China is arming heavily and reorganizing its forces. He predicts a war within five to ten years that could culminate in the dismemberment of the empire and a world shaking upheaval.
The Creek Nation of Indian Territory asks the interior department for permission to send delegates to Washington to sign a new agreement. It would replace the Dawes commission pact, which, after alterations, remains pending. The department is likely to refuse sanction of the provision.
Le Mars Iowa January 1 Will Beaver pleaded guilty tomanslaughter in district court and received four years in Anamosa penitentiary and a one dollar fine plus costs. Beaver helped start the shooting in the Steffin farm killing of John Jensen last April. Steffin is serving eight years for the crime. Beaver’s father and uncle are wealthy local landowners.
Salina Kan Jan 1 The outlook for winter wheat is unfavorable due to dry weather. Eastern and southern Kansas have seen very cold conditions with little measurable snow or rain this winter. Unless moisture arrives soon the crop may be poor. Farmers largely reject the idea that the cold severely damaged the wheat.
Congressman Loud, head of the House committee on post offices and postal roads, told the president that penny postage is out of the question. He said under current conditions it would create an annual deficit of 35 million dollars.
The grist mill and elevator of Price Sound in Winside Nebraska were destroyed by fire. Loss partly covered by insurance. The Union Pacific railroad also lost one car of corn in the blaze.

Washington reports no new developments in the proposed sale of the Danish West Indies to the United States. The U S government has stated its terms clearly for purchasing the islands, with discussions having occurred between the United States and Denmark on conditions.

Frank N. Chase died in Cedar Falls Iowa today from tuberculosis at age 66. He served as secretary of the Iowa Columbian commission in 1893 and was a strong supporter of state fairs and industrial exhibits.

Manila Dec 31 General Chaffee told Associated Press there is no friction between civil and military authorities in the Philippines and harmony prevails. He cited habeas corpus cases like Oakley Brooks as only near friction, resolved to mutual satisfaction.
Perrin T. Millburn of Lusk Wyoming claims strong rancher opposition to national irrigation. He says western ranchers prefer grazing on vast grasslands to farming and fear homesteading may disrupt ranges. He emphasizes that individuals can pursue irrigation if desired.
A thirty eight caliber revolver found buried near Thirteenth South and State Street is now in police custody. They say it is the last critical link to solving the December 18 murder of James R. Hyas. The weapon was traced to a second hand store and purchased by a man matching Peter Mortensen, who remains charged and maintains innocence.
Two thousand people attended a pro Boer meeting in Topeka Kansas where resolutions urged England to invite the U S president and the Danish ruler to act as arbitrators in the South African war. Resolutions were cabled to London. Addresses were made by David Overmeyer General J K Hudson and others.

General Mendoza fled pursuit and remains near San Juan de Los Moros as telegraph lines fall and Ban Righ rumors rise. Germany Venezuela tensions grow as the government suspends use of the German railroads to deter insurgent threats.
Venezuela report says General Luciano Mendoza commander of the Caragobo rebellion was defeated near La Victoria and again near La Puerta while marching with about forty followers toward the inaccessible mountains. He passed Ortiz on December 24 and escaped toward La Puerta before further pursuit.
A passenger train from Omaha collided with a freight train near Malta Illinois killing four and injuring many. George Rudio, Mrs Rudio, B O Nichols and Ellis Duncan died or succumbed to injuries. Grace Stewart, Nichols fiancée, learned of the tragedy after reaching Kalb.

A commission may thereafter draft a formal basis for accord before Pauncefote’s term ends.
Dr John Bell a leading Benton Harbor physician and prominent Knights of Pythias figure died in Benton Harbor Michigan. He served as mayor of Benton Harbor and held the rank of major general of the Knights of Pythias uniform rank in 1898.
