Cass county mourns the death of Hon. Joseph C Gilmore who passed away at 7 30 p m Thursday at his son Lafayette's home in Omaha after a short heart and dropsical illness He resided in Cass county for over forty years served as probate judge of Lancaster County in 1859 and as Cass county state legislator in 1877 Funeral plans indicate services in Omaha and return to Plattsmouth under the A F and A M lodge auspices Also noted are university degrees awarded to local students Roy Pepperberg Helen Travis Joe Zavodsky and Amelia Metzgar in midwinter exercises with several Plattsmouth students earning degrees or certificates.
Plattsmouth girls beat Nebraska City 17 to 7 at Coates hall with solid team play. Captains Kathryn Windham and Mary Wright led their squads as crowds cheered the exciting game and a social dance followed before the Nebraska City visitors returned home on a late train.
Pine Salve Carbolized acts as a poultice and antiseptic for eczema chapped hands and lips cuts and burns. It is sold by Gering and Co's drug store.
The Nebraska legislature reports a failed passage of bills to memorialize Congress for a woman suffrage amendment and to fund a state bacteriology lab with 5000 dollars. It advances mortgage taxation and voting tax bills and requires university open meetings. The senate debates capital punishment and supports an interurban railway bill with a reform measure to regulate railways.
Jennie Alice Soberg died February 13 1907 of consumption after a six week illness. Born in Louisville she lived in Nebanka eight years. She was fifteen years eleven months old. Funeral rites by Rev Hulse at the M E church followed by burial at Mt Pleasant cemetery.
The Auxiliary of Omaha and its districts Ashland Plattsmouth Blair will meet in the crypt of Trinity Cathedral in Omaha on Friday February 22. Mrs. Keefe of Walthill will present mission work among Nebraska Indians. The session will be led by Rev. Dean Beecher Rev. R. B. H. Bell Rev. F. J. Mackay and Bishop Williams.
Nebraska City News reports a lively dance dispute in Union with two parties allegedly using knives and warrants issued, but The Journal finds no local confirmation of the incident and suggests a misreport or crossed wires.
Music pupils of Miss Marista Cagney held a Saturday afternoon recital at her home. The program reviewed Handel life and works and featured several Handel selections. Participants included Mrs. T. E. Todd, Blanche Robertson, Mary Helps, Eleanor Todd, Marie Powell, Marguerite Helps, Ruth Helps, Jean Morrissey, Mrs. H. E. Todd, Francis Whelan and Clyde White.
A major ice gorge formed west of a rail bridges bend on the Platte River causing widespread flooding along both riverbanks. Bridges and tracks on Burlington and Missouri Pacific lines were submerged or damaged, and service was disrupted with many trains canceled or rerouted. Repairs underway while water levels recede at Cullom reports. The same issue of river ice and flood disrupted oreapolis to La Platte tracks. In a separate note, Turnverein staged a large mask ball with prizes awarded to John Little and Emma Van Fleet for best costumes followed by other top winners.
Mrs. Rachel ONeil and Mrs. John Renner mourned in quiet services at the Methodist church and Oak Hill Cemetery. The rites, led by Rev. Houlgate and Rev. Zink, honored their pioneer lives in Cass County with choirs, hymns, obituaries, and a large funeral cortege.
A sociable gathering was hosted Saturday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Pollock where friends joined in card games and a progressive high five. Elegant refreshments followed at a welcome hour with Messrs and Mesdames T. M. Patterson F. A. Murphy Swearingen E. W. Cook and J. H. Donnelly in attendance.
Judge Paul Jessen and Court Reporter John Taggart arrived from Nebraska City on the fast mail as the February term of the district court convened at 1:30 PM Monday. The afternoon focused on bar docket calls, case assignments, motions, and defaults. Trials are scheduled for next week including State v Townsley, State v Schlieske, State v Johnson, State v Stull, and Pope v Oberle for $25,000 damages.
Friends report H. D. Barr is recovering and able to sit up after illness.
The late Hon. Joseph C. Gilmore was transported by Burlington No. 2 after washouts delayed Missouri Pacific service. Plattsmouth A F and A M met the body at the station and escorted it to Oak Hill cemetery for burial. Pallbearers included Mike Mauzy Fred Bramge Geo Thomas Albert Despain August Roesler and J W Johnson. Accompanying pallbearers were J J Gustin of Murdock Mrs Frank Terril Hagler Neb and Wm Gilmore of Omaha.
Mrs John Renner of the south part of the city died suddenly at 12:30 PM Saturday from heart disease after a brief gripped by la grippe. She was about sixty, survived by a husband and six children, and had lived here many years. The community extends sympathy.
Local talks in Plattsmouth push for a genuine pickle factory to be placed in town. Farmers nearby pledge to grow cucumbers under contract, each season, with no remote substation and employment for the pickle season.
A south county tale recalls neighbors arguing over two hogs found on one property. The owner sent a telephone notice promising payment for damages, while the other says he will delay returning them due to sick bows. The hogs fled with a barking dog in pursuit.
Rumor circulated that James Logerty, a longtime Burlington shops employee, had died Sunday morning. The report proved false. Logerty remains at home ill under his son Kern Logerty from Havelock is in town to care for him.
Henry Kauble visits his parents Mr and Mrs Frank Kauble in this city from Omaha and returns with a bride secured there last week. Henry works at Midland Laundry in Omaha and well wishers in Journal office city extend good wishes for a prosperous married life.
The Cass county bar association members today unanimously endorsed Judge Paul Jessen for the United States district judge post in Nebraska. They pledged to focus efforts to place him in an excellent position.
