A large blaze swept through the Holly building causing estimated losses between 5000 and 6000 dollars. Firefighters traced the origin to ashes or charette ashes in the rear upper story and reported timely discovery prevented greater damage.
A major city fire damaged the Journal office equipment and the Soennichsen and Holly buildings. Chief losses include the Holly store and Cosmpolitan club rooms with extensive water and smoke damage. Firefighters faced hydrant delays delaying suppression and roof collapse occurred.
Department members and citizens' responders performed well as they moved contents to safety and fought the flames. Fire under control by 4 p.m. though smoldered until 6 p.m. when alarm was sounded again.
John Meisinger Jr. traveled to Omaha to visit his wife at Immanuel hospital where she underwent surgery a few days ago. She is reported improving but remains far from complete recovery and will not be able to return home soon.
The recent near destruction at Fifth and Main recalls the Weterman opera house fire of July 1892. The opera house was a total loss after a fast blaze, fought with hoses cut by unknown parties, leaving the site in ruins and memories of a state’s once fine venue.
The Toka campfire girls enjoyed a fancy dress party at guardian Mrs. R. P. West's home. Catherine Parmele won first prize for her costume, with Alice Pollock as colonial lady taking second. Games and a luncheon followed as the evening ended.

A local obituary notes the passing of Paul after a period of illness. The entry records his life event and home death last evening.
Funeral announced from the late home on North Sivth Street for Sabine Amelia Germence Kinfmneer, 14th year of heirs, wife of Paul ser ine. She was born February 1926 near Kempten Bavaria and came to this country in 1856, living in Cedar Falls and Plattsmouth. Burial arrangements include cremation in Omaha after the 2 p.m. Wednesday service. She leaves one brother Leonard Kluftinger and five children Matt hew Eda Mia Henry and Marbar.
Miss Helen Loriz of Omaha and Robert C. Kuschinsky of Plattsmouth were married in a small ceremony at St John's rectory. Attendants were Mrs Anna Hrasky and Miss Margaret Hallahan. Kuschinsky served in the U S Army engineering corps in France and is the son of Mr and Mrs Frank Kuschinsky.
The Journal reports that L. R. Snipes county agent of the Cross County Farm Bureau objects to figures. The communication questions the farm bureau’s accounting and seeks clarification on amounts cited.
A published article claimed a total salary of 31,460 from county funds for the county agent. Mr Satpes asserts only 31,000 is for his salary with 260 for office help if needed. plus 1,200 from state and federal aid, bringing total annual compensation to 2,200 rather than 34,709 as stated in the fuel note.
From Tuesday's Daily a unit of the Women's Auxiliary of the American Legion is planned for this city at Hugh Kearns post. Mrs Gladys Henneger will circulate the charter application and organize members including wives mothers daughters or sisters of Legion members or of those killed or who died in service between April 6 1917 and November 11 1918. Membership will be limited until a national auxiliary is formed and dues will be low as the group begins.
The funeral for Barahba Allen Luschinsky was held yesterday from the family home on Wintersteen hill attended by many neighbors and friends. Rev. A V Hunter, pastor of the Methodist church, offered comfort and the hope of reunion in the afterlife. The interment took place at Oak Hill cemetery.
Today marks the beginning of Lent with Ash Wednesday services held at St. John’s Holy Rosary St. Luke’s and St. Paul’s. The season runs to Easter Sunday April 4 with daily Passion Week services and special observances of penance in the four churches.
A simple high noon ceremony at St Eluke's Episcopal Church joined Miss Elva Smith of Omaha to Charles Dovey of the city. Rev W S Leete officiated assisted by family members in a modest gathering. Afterward a luncheon hosted by Mrs Rae F Patterson preceded a short Omaha and Falls City visit before settling with Mr George E Dovey.
The groom has recently come home from the navy after enlisting at the outbreak of the war and serving until a few months ago. A large circle of warm friends offers sincere wishes for the couple to enjoy the good things of life in the future.
Mrs Herman Fields of Council Bluffs la visited her mother Mrs K Kitlnamor and sister Mrs H Gertleeman in the city. She returned yesterday afternoon to Iowa City after attending to her mother and brother Lew Kinnaion who were ill with the flu and remained until they recovered.
Fontenelle chapter members gathered Monday evening at Mrs. E. H. Wescott’s home on High School Hill for a D A R meeting. They selected Mrs. Wil for the state chapter delegate to meet at Hastings Nebraska. The local chapter is noted as one of the most active in the state.
Saturday evening the Bohemian residents of the city gathered at T. J. Sokol hall on West Pearl Street for an old time festival. A special Omaha band played old time songs and dances for hours, evoking memories of the old homeland across the sea. The event marked a rare pleasure after months apart with a late finish and a enjoyed luncheon for participants.
