Boy Scouts visited multiple city industries including Burlington Shops and Telephone offices. They inspected the post office operations and later hiked to the Iowa Nebraska Light and Power Co substation in the afternoon.
Mrs. Bach Sr. of the Bach family endured a serious Sunday morning illness that left her in critical condition briefly. She, in her eighties, has rallied and is resting comfortably with A G Bach and family nearby, showing signs of improvement and cautious optimism for recovery.
The highway to the Missouri river bridge near Plattsmouth is nearly finished and soon ready for graveling. The route, scenic over the bluff, offers broad river views as it leads to the bridge approach. Burlington plans piling for the west viaduct end and city, county, and state will soon accept the road for service.
Plattsmouth city schools arrange for high school students to use Bellevue college pool on Fridays as part of physical education. About forty students attended a trial session with B E Woodward directing the boys and Miss Martha Gorder in charge of the girls.
Waldo J. B. Porter 34 died at Lincoln General hospital after a three week illness from peritonitis. He leaves wife Jean Kearns Porter, parents Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Porter of Crawford, a brother and sister. Funeral Sunday at 2:50 pm at Castle Roper and Matthews chapel, burial Wynka. They had lived in Plattsmouth for months. Mrs Porter is daughter of Mr and Mrs Mike Kearns.
The northbound Missouri Pacific train No 107 will reach the city earlier and the mail closing time is set to 6 15 p m instead of 7 p m Postmaster Holmes urges patrons to mail as early as possible.
The St. Pauls Evangelical Junior Church held its fourth annual banquet with 38 members attending. The event featured a blue and white decor menu including California Cocktail and Tenderloin, toasts on The Tree, and election of officers for the coming year led by toastmaster Frank Schackness Jr. with Franches Henrich as president and Eva Wichmann as committee chair.
Funeral services for Donis Arelene Freel were conducted at Sattler funeral home and Oak Hill cemetery. Rev Harold E Sorter delivered the message of faith and hope as family and friends mourn the two and a half year old girl born May 9 1928 who died February 6 1930 after a brief illness.
The Hotel Riley barber shop, owned by Edward Fullerton for years, sold to Howard Fullerton who runs the business with his brother. Edward, in poor health, retires and seeks treatment in Denver. Howard brings Roy Brazil, an experienced barber, to continue services at the hotel shop.
News from Sandstone Minnesota reports the arrival of a fine little daughter at the home of Mr. and Mrs Francis Anderson. Mrs Anderson was Edith Todd formerly of this city. Mother and baby are reported doing nicely.
The Tuesday Daily notes Flairs Mouth Rotary held a luncheon with a round table discussion on how Rotary can be most effective in community enterprises. The Rotary quartet performed a pleasing rendition titled The Bells of St. Mary’s, praised as one of the era’s beautiful quartet numbers.
The Pinttsavith Boy Scout troops held a court of honor at the high school gym with near full attendance of scouts, scoutmasters, and the executive committee. Six boys from each troop led by Roy Perkins Benay Larson oversaw the program as candles marking Scout laws were lit. Carl Cunningham and E H H Wescott spoke, with T H Pollock delivering the address. Several scouts advanced from tenderfoot to second class and five joined tenderfoot. Robert Mann received special recognition for printing and chemistry. Monte A Streigit, a veteran express messenger and former city resident now in Oakland, California, was part of a guards team sent from Oakland to Vancouver to handle a cargo valued at $18,000,000 from China and Japan. The Japanese gold yen package batch was to be converted into American gold coins at the San Francisco mint, with tight security on sea voyage and transfer to the mint.
W R Holly past commander and local post promotion manager, was honored Sunday at a charming dinner hosted by Mr and Mrs M D Brown. Valentines decor highlighted the event, attended by a small group of friends, who presented a long treasured gift to the guest of honor.
Tuestas is Datty Miss Vestetta Roebertsen, a popular junior, whose infected foot has kept her at home since Saturday. Doctors initially suspected a sprain but an infection necessitated lancing and caused significant pain.
Officials met in Peru to outline the regional tournament to be held March 7 and 8 with games at Penn and 9 am start. District events run Feb 28 March 1 at Stella Dawson and Syracuse for smaller schools. Winners advance to state level with seven teams possible from Nebraska City Auburn Falls City Louisville Papillion Peru Plattsmouth Sterling Humboldt.
District convention attendees from Omaha South post and Plattsmouth post expect about 200 people for a retrogether dinner dance on February 26 at the Legion community building. Adjutant Quinn reports 25 members pledged plus 70 plates as spouses join, with outreach extending to Arl i nston Blair and the Platte River area.
The Crib players of the city held their weekly tournament drawing new recruits. Judge Charles L. Graves, police magistrate, emerged as a top player after several hours of play. New members joining with longtime players include E. P. Stewart Bert Coleman Claude Smith and James Varnard.
A Camp Fire group gathered at the Elks hall on Saturday February 7 for its first regular meeting. They chose Ouchtown as their group name and elected Wayre Smith president Wilde Johnson vice president Shirla Covert secretary Betty Rhoades treasurer Aimee Jane Thomas reporter. Guardianship is by Mrs KR Foster Patterson.
County Court faced tense sessions as Judge A H Duxbury presided over two simultaneous jury trials. A dispute over tenant rights on the Rising farm led to a hung jury after wards with a two week continuance and lease timing. Another suit by Anton Haluskz ve John Kratovhville et al seeks damages for allegedly misrepresented land claims from Florida buyers.
The Plattsmouth Choral Union met at the library auditorium with Professor N. J. Logan from the University of Omaha aiding as instructor for The Messiah. They plan to perform Handel's work in Plattsmouth and Omaha, with a fall and winter program kickoff on the first Tuesday in December. Treasurer John E. Turner presented the financial report.
Last Saturday morning a group of Boy Scouts led by Robert Hall visited Postmaster Holmes to tour the post office. They included Stuart Porter Maynard McCleary Robert Mann Billy Jensen and Henry Guy McMahen. They observed mail handling, dispatching receiving and distribution and received instructions in registered insured and COD mail handling.
The Black and White grocery displays a fine I G A sign installed this week over their section of the Soennichsen building. The store is the local outlet for the allied grocery company.
Only a few Cass county maps remain available at fifty cents each while supplies last. The offer invites local residents to grab maps before they are sold out.
Miss Freda Bord and Mr. Arthur Sprieck wed today at 7:30 in the home of Rev. H G McClusky. The couple, natives of Cass county, will reside eight miles northwest of the city on the groom’s farm as friends and relatives extend best wishes for a long, happy marriage.
The Women’s Home Missionary Society of the Methodist church held a meeting at Mrs. Emma Pease’s home. Mrs. R. E. Bailey presided and Mrs. R. B. Hayes led the devotional. Mrs. W. E. Handley gave enigmas while Miss Helen Virginia Price read I Am the Emigrant. The group approved a Washington supper for February 21 at the First Methodist church.
Constable Tom Svo boda was summoned to Elmwood where three residents faced whisky party trouble. Ralph Lynn and Cy Leach were jailed after whisky was found in a Boyles restaurant. a third man remained to testify. A hearing was postponed to tomorrow due to a legal holiday, with a likely guilty plea anticipated.
