City schools resumed Thursday after a two day break with strong turnout at the high and junior high levels about 75 percent and 50 percent in the grades. Health officials require a physician signed health certificate for absent students returning Friday or later. Nurse Mrs. Lugsch tested pupils for colds while Miss Bernice Ann is sidelined by an ankle injury.

Ralston Band Earns Fourth in National Contest
Post Eipperle MacCourtie No. 99 of Ralston American Legion band directed by Dr. A. E. Wood placed fourth in a Miami national contest last October. The Nebraska unit, 45 members, performed for President Roosevelt and at the Union Pacific train dedication in New York. They plan a 1937 Europe tour and aim to win first prize next year. The award included a $100 check. W. R. Holly and E. P. Stewart accompanied the band at Miami.

Death to Pigeons Stir City War on Birds
John C. Brittain led a two week effort against hundreds of pigeons in the business district. Pigeons roosted at the Bekins building the former First National Bank building and the Cass County courthouse causing messes. Police chief Libershal joked about patrolling with a parasol as Brittain trapped many birds and cleared the bank area and now targets other spots.

Legion meeting highlights large turnout and future plans
The American Legion post in the Bekins building hosted a well attended session with Department Adjutant Henry H Dudley and Department Service Officer Henry Kriz among others from Lincoln Bellevue and Ralston. The meeting covered veteran aid hospitalization efforts near 90 percent non members and the four point national program including care for widows and orphans and anti child labor measures. A King Korn Carnival reel and other films followed with a buffet and social hour and plans to invite the Ralston band and a guest speaker Sam Reynolds for a future public meeting.

Wreck Closes Burlington Short Line Route After Derailment
The Burlington short line from Oreapolis to Ashland was cleared after a Thursday morning wreck that derailed seventeen cars of eastbound freight No. 62. Sara Josephine Bowers born May 24 1855 in Knoxville Iowa to Akron Indiana migrants. She married Zell Ferguson then B F Redman locating in Leigh and Chadron Nebraska where she and her husband were active Congregational church members. She died after moving to Plattsmouth and residing at the Nebraska Masonic Home with burial in Chadron beside her husband. Four cousins survive including Clyde Crosby and Mrs Edith B Oakes of Denver.

The funeral for the late William Otterstein took place Friday afternoon at the Sattler funeral home on Fourth and Vine. Rev. G A Pahl of St. Pauls Evangelical church led services with hymns Rock of Ages and Abide With Me sung by Mrs ay Her ring, Miss Leona Meisinger at the piano. Interment was at Oak Hill cemetery with pallbearers from the Sons of Werman lodge, including H M Goenrichsen, Adolph Gelae, Peter Evers, P F Gous, August Hakow and Frank Bloteer.
