Betty and Peter Promise A Christmas Betrothal
A Washington Willard’s hotel Christmas letter from Betty Revere to Amy De Peyster reveals Betty’s engagement to Peter Van Zandt. Betty discusses a future in France or the United States, her House with two front doors, and a delicate balance of romance and social duty as Peter’s violin rival enters their room, challenging trust. Betty and Peter’s playful tension over music and jealousy underscores their budding romance in the era.
