James Fleshman a well known farmer from southeast of Avoca was injured when a steel cable snapped while pulling stumps with a team. He was operated on after the bowels were suspected to be ruptured and his condition remained critical with little hope of recovery.
Washington dispatch notes Nebraskas Rep Maguire refused to attend a December luncheon at the Metropolitan Club honoring Ohio Governor Harmon. Maguire says he was elected to legislate not to back a presidential boom and wants lawmakers to focus on remedial laws for the masses. He emphasizes public duty over candidate promotion.
The M. W. A. met at their hall for annual officer elections with a social smoker afterward. District Deputy W. C. James of Omaha spoke on the order’s benefits. Elected were George Luahinsky Consul Oliver C. Hudson Worthy Advisor Wm Hassler Banker H. F. Goos Clerk J. W. Peters Manager for three years J. D. Parker Watchman C. A. Davis Sentry Dra J. S. Livingston and E. D. Cummins Physicians H. F. Goos named local deputy.
Armour Packing general manager R C Howe says hog prices will fall between now and June due to cheap corn and strong supply. He notes Chicago closed around 8 dollars while Armour bought 3 200 hogs at 7 dollars in South Omaha. Omaha quotes ranged 7.45 to 7.65, Chicago top at 7.85.

L A Hellig state organizer returns from Hamburg with a national dispensation extending the Plattsmouth charter for 90 days. He is ordered to Fremont and Grand Island to organize nests in those cities.
Campaign to stock the Journal office with a splendid grade of paper aims to elevate writing quality. Vendors tout the 250 quality stationery as durable smooth and dependable for daily use.
Commissioner Fredrich plans to visit Omaha to have his ten dollar Stetson hat cleaned and reshaped to save on a new one. Delles Dernier learns of the plan, swaps the hat for paper, and allies with Judge Beeson and D O Dwyer to accompany Fredrich and observe his reaction at the hatter's.
Mr. F H Clark and four Burlington officials plus twelve to fifteen masters and car foremen from each side of the Missouri river gathered in Plattsmouth for a one day conference. They planned to review methods and economies in handling and moving trains with a focus on reducing costs and improving repairs.
Special dispatch from David City indicates Monte Robb of Mynard will be steward of the penitentiary under the incoming administration. The appointment, expected to go to a Republican, is welcomed as first class and fitting by the Journal.
Chief of Police Hen Rainey detained Tom Davia of Mexico Roy Peabody of Canada and another man after they passed a counterfeit check at Donat's saloon and attempted similar stunts at several downtown spots. A second forged check was found on Davis and charges await arraignment before local judges.
A December 14 St Louis dispatch reports the Missouri Pacific machinists boilermakers and blacksmiths strike, now in its seventh month, may end tomorrow. Union leader Jamen O Connell says talks with Missouri Pacific officials in Kansas City and Chicago may yield an eight hour day hours rearranged in roundhouses pay raises and immediate rehiring while company manager A W Bullivan remained noncommittal.
Pupils of Becker school in District 41 and teacher Mise Marie Hiber host a box social at the school house on Friday evening December 23. The program begins at 8 o clock sharp and proceeds fund the school supplies.
Mrs C M Parker rode the morning train to Omaha where she attended to several business items.
In a district court trial held over two days a jury found G W Harshman and son in law F C Royal not guilty on a criminal charge. The decision drew mixed reactions while the plaintiff may appeal. Royal has many local friends and Harshman is a long time community resident. The second case, Earl R Bish v Burlington relief department, involved a $2000 claim for a lost foot. The court heard the matter as a legal issue with a prior 10 000 judgment against the rail line existing in a previous term.
From Thursday's Dally, the Parmele opera house drew a good crowd for a 50 wager match between Lee Fickler and Kid Parker of Alliance. Referee William Heinrich Sr. watched as Parker briefly held an early fall, but Fickler’s wind and strength prevailed within the time limit, earning him applause and a potential rematch news.
Mr. C. F. Harkness of Ford Paving and two expert laborers led a block laying crew on Fourth street this morning. Blocks were unloaded from cars and moved to the workers, with Vine street completed Wednesday night and only Fifth street remains after today. The project proceeds in ideal weather and should wrap up by evening.
Mr. Clark Welliver of Lexington Nebraska stopped by the Journal office during a visit to Murray to see his brother in law D A Young. He departed for home this afternoon after a short town stay visiting relatives.
Otoe county shows a successful annual poultry exhibit at Nebraska City run by local breeders. Farmers wives attend to choose breeds, with many varieties gathered for selection. Plattsmouth is urged to start a poultry exhibit soon after holidays, with businessmen offering help and only a starter needed.
The long time Cass County resident Miles Standish, now living in Kansas, visited the city in Willey evening. He renewed his subscription to Prom Friday and that of his son Ivers. Standish showed a seven pound solid sweet potato sample to illustrate crop value and praised local surroundings.
In County Court Judge Reoson's court today a petition for administration was filed in the estate of D. Henry Grafe deceased. The deceased resided in the county's south part and the petition was filed by County Attorney Tishoff of Otoe county. It is alleged the real estate is valued about 16000 dollars and personal property about 1100 dollars.
The machine shop of the new foundry building is nearly enclosed as Mr. Boyd and his crew raise rafters and sheathing. Cooler weather has aided the contractor, allowing rapid progress and good condition of the project.
