Local man seeks writ to free Plattsmouth deserter
Matthew Gering of Plattsmouth arrives in Omaha to obtain a habeas corpus for Joseph Janda held there on a navy deserter charge. Janda, a minor who enlisted without parental consent, is the son of Thomas and Francis Janda, who enlisted November 16 and was sent to Norfolk. Gering recalls Janda’s longing for home as he rode a box car toward Plattsmouth, where the chief of police reportedly detained him in custody.
