The coronation of King Korn V and Queen Harvesta on September 20 marks the Karnival opening for 1939. The Wednesday afternoon parade is omitted to favor the evening crowning, allowing broader attendance and a more glittering pageant.
A sizable number of local WPA employees were laid off for a thirty day period last week due to 18 months of continuous employment. Included are several foremen and key workers whose skills are hard to replace, creating significant staffing disruption.
Mrs Robert Burr formerly of Murray now living in Calloway has spent several days visiting in Murray and Plattsmouth. She stayed with Clar ence Keil and the Wohlfarths in Plattsmouth and with Phillip Keil and C E Reed in Murray.
Among the visitors from this community at the Sidney Iowa rodeo this afternoon were Mr and Mrs F T Wilson son Roy and daughter Mildred of Murray Mr and Mrs Robert E Sediak and son Bobbie of this city.

The board of education held a morning meeting to fill vacancies and prepare for the September 4 opening. Helen Catherine Davis of Lincoln was named teacher in the commercial department, a University of Nebraska graduate skilled in shorthand and typewriting. Ruth Horne of Papillion was chosen for the grade schools. Dorothy Glock resigned from the fifth grade with a successor to be elected later.
The Louisville bridge is undergoing a face lifting with aluminum paint to mark toll removal on September 8. A three day celebration will welcome the free bridge handed over by Governor Cochran. City preparations extend to streets and buildings for the event as tolls end on the last Platte River structure.
County Clerk George R. Sayles County Treasurer John E. Turner County Assessor W. H. Puls and County Attorney Walter H. Smith traveled to Lincoln to confer with state officers on the new law affecting vehicle transfer and licensing. County Commissioners H. C. Backemeyer and Ray Norris planned to join the party.
Mr and Mrs Ss S Chase of Holyoke Colorado are in the city to visit Mr and Mrs Hill Martin and family Mrs Martin is a daughter They have been visiting Auburn with relatives and friends and will also visit Omaha Mr Chase reports late wheat is very good in that Colorado section
A Plattsmouth Chamber of Commerce group led by Area Engineer D. R. Thornton took a morning trip from Omaha to Nebraska City aboard the Sargeant Pryor. They viewed revetment and dike work, rock matting, and river navigation preparations with explanations by Captain Hickman and Captain Cook, lunching aboard before returning home. Participants included E. H. Wescott, J. Howard Davis, H. A. Schneider, F. J. Rea, T. H. Pollock, E. H. Bernhardt, and Captain Thornton.
Farm ers' day features a Colt Show with Dr. O. Sandin in charge. A suitable area will care for the colts and safeguard them during the display. Prizes will be offered for top animals. Farmers urged to bring led, halter-broke colts ready for Thursday September 21 parade.
Miss Mary Ann Winscot left last evening at 7 55 for Chicago Illinois. She traveled via Omaha aboard the Challenger to meet Mr and Mrs William Mangan close friends of the Winscot family and an aunt of Mr Winscot. The visit promises her greatest thrill.
A new dump truck for the City of Plattsmouth street department arrived yesterday and will enter service after committee approval. The purchase was approved at Monday night’s council meeting following bids received weeks ago. Cab doors will be painted with "Plattsmouth Street Department."
Mr and Mrs Carl Schneider and their young son have moved into their new home on high school hill, the former H G Soennichsen residence. The family is arranging the house and look forward to enjoying its charm and beauty.
Mrs. George Schwinn of Plymouth Wisconsin and her son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs Carl Andrae of Pekin Illinois arrived Wednesday to visit with John P Sattler Sr brother of Mrs Schwinn and other family members They will travel to Carleton Nebraska for a visit and return later for a longer stay.
Lydia Pitz daughter of Mr and Mrs Otto Pitz and Orville Muller son of Mr and Mrs Ernest Muller of Clatonia Nebraska were married in a small ceremony at St Pauls Evangelical and Reformed church. Attendants were Edna Carlburg and Sam James. The couple plans a short honeymoon in Clatonia and will reside on a Murray area farm. Mrs Muller is 22, a Plattsmouth High School graduate and active in church affairs. Mr Muller is 25, Clatonia High School graduate and a farmer.
After eleven weeks in California Mrs Paul Vandervoort and her son returned to Plattsmouth Monday afternoon with Bob Hirz. She visited many former Plattsmouth residents on the west coast including relatives in Santa Ana and Burbank and enjoyed the trip.
Dr. R. P. Westover, a popular local physician, returned from Clarkson hospital in Omaha this morning after treatment for gallstones. He has been discharged and may return later for an operation.
Mrs. George Conis and her children have returned from Perry Iowa where they were visiting for a month. They are accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Gus Stavron of Nebraska City and Miss Catherine Conis will visit Nebraska City briefly before school starts.
Mrs F L Rea is very ill at her home 606 Timber Street with a nervous condition and has been bedfast for two to three weeks. Her children are providing care.
Dr and Mrs H G McClusky conclude a southern eastern tour covering 11 states District of Columbia and southern Canada. They visited Niagara Falls Montecello Mount Vernon and Sweet Briar College while touring the New York World’s Fair Rockefeller Center and RCA Building in New York City. Return stops included Lodi Wisconsin and Kankakee Illinois with the Minor family in their new home.
Mrs Zella Traudt and family Robert and Jo Ann report a fine time after a month on the west coast. They stayed with E Glenn Elliott at Hermosa Beach and with L E Crain in Los Angeles. They toured San Francisco Bay area visiting the fair and other sights, traveling over 4500 miles in total.
Miss Evelyn Wolph led county 4 H club work visiting the city with Margie Ruth Pollard Virginia Pollard Doris Anderson and Marie Anderson. The group toured the Journal plant and spent a few minutes inspecting operations.
Mrs D T Haley Sr was rushed to Methodist hospital Thursday and immediately operated on for appendicitis. Though in critical condition the patient withstood the operation in excellent condition and is showing the necessary improvement hoped for.
Mr and Mrs George E Rebal of Iowa City Iowa visit over the weekend at the home of Mr and Mrs James Rebal and other relatives They are returning home from a visit in Kansas City
Sister Celestine, principal at St John’s, arrives with two other Ursuline Sisters to begin the school year. She spent the summer in Nebraska with a lengthy operation at an Omaha hospital and two weeks in Nebraska City for recuperation. Her mother house is in Kentucky.
Sheriff Joe Mrasek investigated a robbery at the John Klemm farm home near Union. Intruders drained five gallons of gas five gallons of tractor fluid and tractor oil before fleeing while the family was away.
Theodore Schroeder of San Francisco, a major west coast wallpaper businessman, spends a few days visiting relatives. He has been in New York markets and is en route home. He stays with Mr. and Mrs. Emil Ptak, a brother-in-law, and at the A. J. Snyder home.
City Treasurer M. D. Brown returned home Wednesday unable to stand due to a painful foot ailment causing him suffering and annoyance.
The Plattemouth Journal announces the limited time free 900 page New Universities Webster Dictionary offer for one or more year subscriptions. A 19 cent packing and mailing fee applies, with the deadline of September 10 to request the dictionary by mail or in person at the Journal office in Plattsmouth Nebraska. The offer covers new and renewal subscriptions and adds readers from Cass county towns including Alvo Avoca Eagle Elmwood Greenwood Manley Murdock Murray Nehawka South Bend Union Wabash and Weeping Water.

A son named Charles William was born Thursday morning August 17 to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Denson at their Wintersteen Hill home. Both mother and child are reported doing well. he is the grandson of Mrs. Edna Richardson and Mrs. Sheldon.
Walter and Howard Cotner of Red Cloud Nebraska arrived Thursday when their mother Mrs. Sarah Cotner aged 85 fell critically ill. Dr G W Cotner from Eureka Springs Arkansas joined Friday to be at her bedside.
Mrs. W. H. Smith of Murray is reported to be better at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha where she is receiving treatment. The family notes encouragement after weeks of declining condition.
