The city observed Easter with large congregations across Catholic, Episcopal, Evangelical, Methodist and Presbyterian churches. Bishop Shayler officiated at St. Luke's, while sunrise services, special choirs, and cantatas highlighted the day.
The sale of the New Way Ham burger castle at Sixth and Vine streets attracted many bidders. The building and stock, owned by H. A. Brown Jr, were sold by Constable Tom Svoboda to Charles Creeley of Falls City. Creeley plans to move and reopen the castle soon.
Plattsmouth Water Corporation has been laying a buried water pipe from the pumping station to the U S rifle range north of the city. The line, long surface laid, will extend throughout the range improving the camp and range water service used by Fort Crook troops and the reserve officers during summer training.
Mt Zion commandery No. 5 Knights Templar held an Easter service at First Methodist Church with many local members and visiting Templars from Nebraska City, plus Cass Chapter DeMolay as guests. Rev. Harold E Sorter delivered the sermon, praising Templar ideals and unity amid impressionable choral music including Pardon by Maunder with soloists Mrs E G Shellenbarger and Dr R P Westover.
Charles Nowacek of Plattsmouth high school earned the silver medal at Tarkio College Missouri in the Tri State Declamatory Contest. He advanced from preliminaries with strong finals performance surpassing district rivals and marking a notable close to his forensics year. Edwin Longfellow of Bedford Iowa won gold, with Charles Parker of Shenandoah Iowa taking third.
Mr and Mrs Frank Mullen hosted a charming chicken dinner for family in Denison and Dunlap Iowa. Guests included Edward Mullen and Emmett Mullen with fiancées Cecil Jones and Mable Houlihan. Easter floral decor created a festive scene. The engagement of Miss Mable Houlihan and Emmett Mullen was announced for Dunlap Iowa on April 30.
Burlington shops will be overhauled to look better and be more pleasant for workers. Grounds will gain more lawns, stone walks, and floral plantings with added water lines for summer upkeep. An old frame building will become a parking area, upholstery work moves to the paint shop, and the blacksmith building will become a Duco work shop for coaches and cars with new tracks.
Large crowd from Plattsmouth attended the Sunday funeral at First Baptist Church Nebraska City for Edward M Fullerton. The American Legion and local friends filled the services with Rev Albright delivering comfort then the body was laid at Wruka cemetery with a firing squad saluting and Taps played.
The John F. Gorder family enjoyed a large Easter gathering with the full family circle present for the first time in months. Mr. Gorder returned from farming in Colorado and eldest son Harlan came from Lexington, joined by Frederick from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln for the reunion.
Sunday afternoon Miss Ruth Lind Say music supervisor of the Plattsmouth schools sustained a painful ankle sprain after stepping from a curb at Sixth and Main. The right ankle was badly sprained when her heel caught on the curb, and she will be off her foot most of the time until healed.
The Plattsmouth high school orchestra earned second place in the district contest held in Omaha. The girls glee club won second in their class, with James Comstock attaining third in the corner and trumpet section.
Plattsmouth Woman's Club gathered at Mrs. A H Duxbury's home with hostesses Mrs. R W Knorr Mrs. Guy C C White Mrs Stodola and Miss Lillian White. They reviewed plans for the annual banquet on May 5 and music week starting May 6 with committee chairs Mrs Robert Reed and Mrs James T Begley.
The Murray Red Sox defeated the North Omaha Crickets 5 to 2 at Murray Grounds in cold conditions. Schlischke pitched well for the Sox with solid defense, while Chet Lund added a homer in relief and Hans Newman hit a three bagger. Pearsley guarded left field and contributed a triple as the Sox prepare for a South Side Merchants challenge next Sunday.
Harry White, Officer Pickrel, and relatives returned from Des Moines after learning Leo Ryan died when a westbound bus struck him on the highway while he fixed a flat tire. Funeral services were held in Mason City, Iowa, with relatives from Proctor, Minnesota also attending.
City schools across departments held Arbor Day programs and planted trees to replace failures from last year. At the high school and Central grounds two trees were planted, withFreshman class taking over care of the class tree from 1929. Each class appointed a committee to protect the trees and urged homeowners to plant and protect trees for long term landscape and natural resource conservation.
Mrs. Fred Spangler and daughter Mrs. Lillian Sack hosted the Social Workers Flower club at Spangler’s residence on Wednesday April 16 with Mrs. Jack Stamp presiding due to Mrs. Gilmour’s absence. Topics for study were discussed and a luncheon was served. The next gathering is set for May 21 at Mrs. Georgia Creamer’s home with a quilt to be given away.
The supervisor and census takers urge residents of Plattsmouth to report anyone missed or newly moved in to ensure a complete 1930 census. Call the Journal office at No 6 or notify census takers with omitted names to correct the listing and secure accurate city totals.
Henry Mauzy returns Saturday from California where he and wife spent winter visiting their daughter in a San Francisco suburb and a Los Angeles relative. They visited Den ver neighbors en route home. Mrs Mauzy remains for extended visit while Henry resumes his productive garden work and regains weight.
Plattsmouth High School seniors aired a program on KFNF Shenandoah, with R Foster Patterson as host introducing each number. The lineup included George Sayles’s The Bells of Donna, Marjorie Arn accompaniment, Stein Song, Should I, a violin duet by Donald Rainey and Ira Mumm, and saxophone by John Albert, plus a later KMA Earl May station program.
Father Marcellus Agius reports his brother Father George Agius has safely arrived in Europe landing at Naples. He describes a pleasant crossing with congenial passengers and plans to travel to Malta then Rome to continue his tour of leading countries.
John Nelson arrived from Denver to visit his parents when he suffered a sudden attack of appendicitis. He was taken to Clarkson hospital in Omaha where an immediate operation removed his appendix. He is recovering and hopes to resume his normal activities soon.
Last evening at the Fifth street intersection John Hallstrom driving a Ford sedan collided with John Hirz’s car. Hirz’s fender was badly damaged while Hallstrom’s front wheel was knocked off. Residents gathered as wreckage was cleared and Hallstrom’s car was taken to a garage for repairs.
A community cleanup shows real effort beyond formal projects as women, children, and neighbors tidy yards and vacant lots. Residents wield rakes and hoes, turning unsightly spots into cleaner, more attractive neighborhoods and boosting city beauty.
A northbound Missouri Pacific passenger train struck a Ford sedan at a crossing near the Stull farm north of the city. C. A. Kessler of St. Joseph suffered probable fatal injuries. Ray Brown, also of St. Joseph, was seriously hurt. The car carried dry goods and personal luggage. both men were moved to Omaha hospitals. The wreck occurred after the car failed to hear the approaching train and attempted to turn north to avoid it.
The Cass County Courthouse stood in hushed stillness on Arbor Day as officials and deputies except for the county clerk and assessor force and Judge Duxbury left for outdoor planting. Hans Siever guarded the building while visitors wandered in unaware of the Nebraska holiday.
Word from Immanuel hospital in Omaha says Mrs. M. Trees showed daytime gain and rested well after a serious condition. Doctors report no fever and a pulse near 130, with cautious optimism among hospital staff and relatives.
In the hearing for Alice Haffke vs Fred Haffke the court granted a temporary restraining order barring the defendant from disposing of property and set alimony at 25 dollars per month for the plaintiff pending final disposition of the case.
