Richardson man shot by hitchhikers in McKinney robbery

A 26 year old Richardson man was shot and robbed early today by two hitchhikers. He was listed in undetermined condition at Tom Moore Hospital in McKinney. Sheriff George Smith said John Simon was among the involved parties and the investigation continues.

Changes Seen in Police Dept Editor's Note Plano Police Growth

The last in a series on the Plano Police Department covers Chief J.B. Toler recounting growth since 1959 from a three-man unit to 43 officers with 13 vehicles. He cites professionalization, records and communications upgrades, space limits, and the new Service Division aiding veteran hires. He stresses town support and commitment to protection and budget adherence. Two suspects in a separate case are jailed on assault to murder and armed robbery charges.

Christmas Dinner Despite Lockup At San Quentin Prison

Inmates at San Quentin enjoyed a traditional Christmas roast turkey dinner during a month long general lock up. Candy and peanuts were handed out on Christmas Eve as about 300 relatives visited on Christmas Day and inmates watched a movie after their evening meal.

Three Holiday Fires Burn Homes and Apartment

Firefighters battled three Christmas fires over the holidays. The Creeks Wood Apartments bath house three blaze destroyed a chlorine supply and damaged the building. In Bellwood at 3500, David Collins’s home and contents burned when a Christmas tree sparked flames after lights were plugged in. A separate Ridgecrest residence at 1426 owned by David Finn suffered a kitchen fire.

Reward Posted Two Killers Sought

A $10,000 reward is offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of two bandits who robbed a Kentucky Fried Chicken at Polk and US 6n and killed 23 year old Plano man Joseph David Lee. The assistants manager was shot in the heart during 8 p.m. robbery as the men fled with about $1,000. Lee was forced to open a lobby safe after being pistol whipped and later shot in the back. The men, in their 20s, six feet and five six, wore African style haircuts and fled south on Polk. Lee was taken to Bay City for burial.
