Simon Urges 10 Gallon Gas Limit Amid Energy Crisis

William E. Simon urged Americans to cap gasoline use at 10 gallons per week and asked service stations to limit sales to 10 gallons per customer. He stressed voluntary compliance, while noting new emergency powers could enable mandatory rationing if needed. 1.5 million barrels of jet fuel were to be allocated to international airlines.

Plano City Council Sets Landfill Fees and Parking Bans

The Plano council approved disposal charges for private haulers at the city landfill while residents with household trash are exempt. Fees include 1.50 to 2.50 for pickups and 0.75 per cubic yard for large trucks, plus 0.50 per cubic yard for packers. Parking bans were enacted on sections of Jupiter and 15th Street. The council honored Ron Reecer for donating 35 acres for a park, rejected Ranch Estates two plats, and moved toward moving buildings on Plano streets with 25 dollar and 10 dollar fees. An abeyance on disannexation of 58 acres near Jupiter chaparral was taken to gauge Allen zoning. Audit receipt and tax-roll tweaks were approved. Nina Fessler and Jim Murrell missed oath due to illness. Bonnie Jeane and Warner Richeson joined the Industrial Development Steering Committee.

Telephone bill cut continues tax relief to 8 percent

Bills show a one percent decrease for 1974 as the second step in phasing out the Federal Excise Tax on telephone service. The tax, first imposed during the Korean Conflict and lowered to 9 percent in 1973, will drop to 8 percent next year. It applies to local and long distance calls.

Plano approves citywide garbage bag program

Plano adopts an ordinance effective March 1 requiring disposable bags for garbage collection. Residents receive four bags weekly at no extra charge, with extra bags at $3.50 per box. The city expects reduced overtime and greater efficiency, citing polls and trial results.

Christmas Deadlines Announced by Plano Daily Star Courier

The Plano Daily Star-Courier will skip publication on Christmas Day to allow staff time with families. Classified ad deadlines shift earlier for the shortened week with the Sunday Dec 23 edition due today at 5 pm and the Dec 26 paper due tomorrow at noon.

Woman Found Shot Dead Near Murphy East of Plano

An unidentified woman about 40 years old was found shot multiple times by her brother at 5 a.m. near Murphy, east of Plano. The Collin County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the death and awaiting next of kin notification. Further details will be released once relatives are contacted.

Sheriff Arrests Plano Contractor in Stolen Property Case

A Plano building contractor, John Thomas Cotten, was arrested on a warrant for receiving and concealing stolen property. Bond set at $10,000. Deputies from the Collin County Sheriff's Dept and a search of Cotten’s apartment recovered reportedly stolen merchandise. Investigations into recent burglaries in the county continue.

House blocks shredder for impeachment inquiry

Washington UPI report says House Administration Committee refused Judiciary requests to buy a Destroy it Superspeed Series 52AM paper shredder for impeachment inquiry duties. Chairman Hays said the request mischaracterized aims and was not approved.
