Plano police report a sharp rise in crime in November with a 60.44 percent increase over 1974 and a 2.82 percent rise from October 1975. Assaults up 20 percent and burglaries up 40 percent. 12 assaults, 52 burglaries, 84 thefts and 4 auto thefts recorded. Police cleared 19 percent of offenses, with property recovered totaling $15,057 of $44,460 missing.
Collin County law officers report progress but no prime suspect in four girls' deaths. Chief's deputy Royce Abbott denies any pending arrest and notes no definite suspect. Investigators have pursued clues in the case including 20-year-old Elvalda Joy Gann and identified 17-year-old Sherry Joyce Smith as a person of interest.
Abbott ties Miss Smith, Miss Gann and 14 year old Carol Marie Anderson to a common profile and East Dallas hangout. He says detectives are closer to a solution but wary of arrests, with juvenile officers aware of all three.
Plano police investigated four burglarized motor vehicles Monday night along with six thefts including Christmas lights. A juvenile was arrested on robbery related counts and marijuana possession while others faced traffic and disorderly conduct charges. Tenants reported 42 calls for help and three accidents occurred downtown. Michael Davis McMahon Jr. suffered minor injuries after a 1974 Kawasaki motorcycle collided with a 1973 Chevrolet driven by Cheryl Lynn Leavitt at FM 544 and Independence. A 1973 Dodge and a 1968 Ford collided at FM 544 and Avenue. a 1974 Chrysler and a 1974 Chevrolet collided in a lot on 15th St.
Agriculture Secretary Earl Butz says 1976 food prices may rise about half as much as in 1975. He attributes potential moderation to crop production, weather, and higher distribution costs rather than farm costs, and criticizes concentrated power in agriculture policy.
Ambulance calls kept Plano firefighters busy on Tuesday with six ambulances dispatched to residents. Firefighters also extinguished a grass fire in the 2300 block of Northcrest at 6 48 p.m. Emergency ambulance service remains free of charge to Plano citizens.
The Piano Civic Chorus launches the holidays with a December 12 concert at Davis Elementary School 2701 Parkhaven Dr. Tickets cost 125 adults 75 cents children in advance and 150 adults 1 at the door. Sponsored by Plano Parks and Recreation Dept and the Plano Fine Arts League.
In Vilnius Sakharov was denied entry to a trial of biologist Sergei Kovalev charged with crimes against the state. Sakharov’s wife Yelena went to Oslo to receive his Nobel Peace Prize, delivering his acceptance speech smuggled out of the USSR.
