The Daily Express says a surgeon refused to operate on Howard Hughes hip in a hotel room claiming he never operates there. Hughes was later smuggled to the London Clinic for the procedure after the failed hotel bid.
Cuero Texas trains a fast turkey named Ruby Begonia for a cross state heat in Worthington Minnesota and a Cuero rematch in October. Trainers consider wing clipping or a harness to prevent flying as race rules require running only.
Brazil's National Indian Foundation warned workers on the Trans Amazon Highway to beware cannibals. Anthropologist Helio Rocha challenged the claim saying the Nereya Nereyana tribe likely does not exist and that the Tiryo tribe spread gossip to justify conquests. He also noted plans to use smoke grenades for protection.
William R. Barron, Air Board publicity director, was charged after allegedly attempting to extort $50,000 from Air Board president Herbert C. McKee and EPA regional administrator Arthur W. Busch. The payoff was to be dropped west of Austin, after letters threatening public disclosure of misconduct were received August 1.
Policeman Jan De Wit and beauty specialist Mary De Wilde, both 23, married this week in Rotterdam, twenty months after they met when Jan rescued Mary from a car that toppled into a canal. Judge Tom Ryan’s court granted Billy Joe Nichols’s motion to quash the disorderly conduct complaint stemming from a May property dispute in Plano. The ruling found the statute lacks specific definition and the charge failed to clearly describe the alleged conduct, place, and act charged.
City officials and Chuck Frisk oppose expansion of Shiloh Airport noting the runway would bring high performance air traffic over Plano. Frisk warns a 6000 foot runway near schools raises environmental and safety concerns while Richardson cites lack of plan.
In Dallas Safeway stores limits to two packages of USDA graded choice beef, while officials say supply is still short and allocated by sales. Some stores report normal beef on hand with no rationing, and managers warn that panic buying worsens shortages as supplies gradually improve.
Plano residents Wendy Wendler and Judy Anne Snider were named Outstanding Young Women of America for 1973 and are considered for state and national honors. Fifty state winners will be named this fall, with national winners announced at a Washington DC ceremony.
