School trustees held a budget study session to trim the proposed 7,201,448 operating budget for 1973 74 by ten tentative steps. They approved 47,500 in reductions and will finalize the cuts and the full budget at a Sept. 4 public hearing.
Plano fire marshal Scott Bell says fundraising sales of home fire extinguishers with aerosol cans are illegal and dangerous. He notes some cans contain flammable liquids that worsen fires and urges compliance with state stamping. Bell also warns of grass and weed growth behind fences creating fire and health hazards in the area.
Sheriff deputies claim they were thwarted by District Court Judge Tom Ryan when seven suspects released on personal recognizance bonds had been suspected or charged with marijuana possession or trafficking. The weekend raid involved 28 arrests across Collin County as lawmen push a hard line on pushers while noting probate details and court procedures.
Trustees cut to finalize a 1973 74 operating budget based on ADA of 10 285 with 24 percent rise over 1972 73 and enrollment projected to grow 25 percent. The plan allocates 4 863 413 for teachers materials and field trips, 841 507 for administration and program evaluation, 384 304 for pupil services and 304 605 for general district administration, with facilities maintenance at 782 069 and a small remaining portion for other costs.
County officials say the Collin County jail is unfit and unsanitary and lacks space to segregate juvenile female mentally ill pretrial and convicted detainees. Sheriff George Smith and County Judge Bill Proctor back another bond election for a new jail after the kitchen was condemned in 1970 and a state health letter cited facility deterioration.
