Mayor announces public hearing on a proposed War Chest plan to fund local relief work. A second conference will follow after organizations respond, with delegates from war relief groups and charities invited to attend and debate the plan publicly.
Muhlenberg Hospital reports Meaf Apgar of Clinton Avenue and Joate Dunlap of Mariners Place ill with influenza and pneumonia. Dunlap's wife Mrs. Dunlap died in St Marys church service. three family deaths occur within a week. Paul Ro Agar and Wil Apd also fell ill. Mrs Apgar and children survive. Funeral details noted with pallbearers.
Dr Frank C Ard outlines what influenza is how it attacks and measures to offset it. He notes the 1918 style grippe may return in Plainfield with severe fever respiratory symptoms and possible pneumonia, urging bed rest isolation masking and physician care to limit spread.
Harry C. Van Emburgh, a local civil engineer, has taken a position with Hay Construction Company of Newark as construction engineer. He began his new duties Tuesday.
Mr and Mrs Joseph F Burke of Monroe Avenue announce the birth of their daughter yesterday morning. The Family extends thanks and joy for the new arrival to brighten their home.
The Plainfield North Plainfield Chapter appeals for volunteers to sew 10000 gauze masks. The urgent request comes as the Red Cross urges immediate action to produce and ship masks to aid in the influenza epidemic effort.
The Plainfield Liberty Committee reports 387000 in subscriptions, far short of the one million hoped for in the first week. Influenza restricts gatherings, but a special permit allows an Airdome meeting with moving pictures and speeches to boost sales tomorrow. The Bay Band will perform in the business district and bond salesmen will work after each program.
Miss May Mattox of Spruce Street has been seriously ill and is reported to be improving slowly. Local residents await updates on her condition from family and doctors.
James Hunter of Scotch Plains, a Camp Dix influenza victim, was buried at the city cemetery after a 9 o'clock funeral at Seph's Church North Plainfield. Rev Father Waldron officiated the tequiem mass. A military escort and honors accompanied the body. Hunter, 30, was a son of Mr and Mrs James Hunter and a former resident of Scotch Plains. Forty eight more cases raise Plainfield total to 193 since September 18. Fifteen deaths so far, with North Plainfield also affected. Muhlenberg Hospital treats twenty four patients with pneumonia or advanced influenza since the outbreak began. Two recent deaths were North Plainfield residents Ernest J. Neal and Schroeder Jr. Local doctors Dr W H Anthony Dr W B Gray and Rev Hennessey contract the disease but remain at home.
A. E. Smith is appointed plant engineer at Standard Aero Bayway shops, succeeding Alex Milne who moves to the production department. Smith, son of Captain and Mrs. William C. Smith, Rutgers 1904 graduate, has extensive contracting work with bridges and concrete railroad trestles in Union Somerset Middlesex counties. He will run the contracting business with Herbert N. Holder as superintendent and Edward P. Smith as foreman, continuing until after the war ends when he plans to return to his own interests.
The funeral of Mrs. Kate Cramer Haynes wife of Joseph A Haynes will be held tomorrow at 2 PM at the home of her son John Haynes in Annandale Burial will follow in Annandale cemetery Mrs Haynes 71 born at Annandale she lived in Plainfield forty years and moved recently to Tillotson road Fanwood N J Her husband was Plainfield's Jersey Central agent for nearly forty years.

Carman of Watchung avenue and LeRoy G. Carman son of Dr and Mrs A John Traynor of East Second Street left yesterday as limited service men bound for Fort Thomas Kentucky. They traveled to Philadelphia and boarded a special train carrying two hundred diverse men from New Jersey. They are due to arrive at Fort Thomas near Frankfort Kentucky at 2 PM.
Private James Whelan, son of Mr and Mrs Martin Whelan of 636 East Second Street, died yesterday at Naval Base Hospital Hampton Roads from influenza. No funeral arrangements yet due to large death toll at the hospital.
Mr and Mrs RM Paul of 943 West are named as the parents in a note announcing a girl born three years ago.
