Fire damages home of James Peacock on West Seventh

A fire started in a closet early Tuesday at 1224 West Seventh street damaged the Peacock residence for about 2500 dollars. Family members escaped with the aid of nearby neighbors. two invalids were cared for at a neighbor’s home. The home, a large French-root style, avoided total loss due to fire stops. nearby Live residence had burned previously under similar circumstances.

Standard Aero cuts guard force at North avenue plants

The Standard Aero Corporation reduces guard strength from 36 to 24 at the North avenue plants. Workers continue eight hour shifts and receive forty hours off once a month. The cut follows a drop in activity at local shops.

Two Men Arraigned On Anti-Loafing Charge In Plainfield

John Cornwell aged thirty five and G Harris aged twenty eight faced Judge DeMerd in city court on Tuesday charged by police with violating the anti loafing act. They were reprimanded and ordered to work. Cornwell reported he secured a job at the Saurer Motor plant and Harris said he would take a position with a local manufacturing firm. Police say these arrests are the first since the act took effect and several other men with no apparent occupation are under surveillance.

Plainfield Thrift Stamp Drive Sets Pledges and Sales Records

Chairman Ernest R. Ackerman reports the Plainfield Thrift Stamp campaign last week secured 2 676 pledges and raised 75 475 dollars in stamps. Fire tears into Woodruff garage at 137 Westervelt Avenue

Two cars were saved from a Saturday night fire that destroyed the garage owned by Hiram A. Woodruff at 137 Westervelt Avenue. Damage is about 509 dollars, insured. Woodruff could not determine a cause as the home was checked shortly before the blaze. The borough fire department arrived quickly but the garage was lost.
