Calkins argues against church influenced politics in the Church Association and urges reconsideration of a council ticket stance. Capt. Fred W. Vogel of the Seventy-First New York Regiment died after a long illness. He commanded Company H stationed near Hudson, N Y. Vogel enlisted in 1897 and served in Cuba and the Mexican border. Burial will be at Hope Cemetery with many comrades in attendance.
Delegates from across the country prepare to attend a national church conference in Arlington Avenue and Ninth Streets. Under Rev. William C Hubbard, with a full schedule of prayers, missionary programs, and wartime themes, the gathering will feature leaders such as Rev. George B Shaw and Rev. J L Skagen. Meals, accommodations, and event logistics are arranged by a large church committee including Mrs Jackson, Mrs J F Kimberly, and Dr Henry Maxson.

Motor Inspector George J. Tobin of Grant Township was arrested for speeding on Sotbet street last Saturday. In borough court he received a suspended sentence after admitting to speeding up to twenty two miles an hour. The Price woman, Mrs. State Price of New York, also faced charges and received a suspended sentence. Officers Townley and Dennis testified Tobin could not safely stop the car as it threatened others. Chief Wells notified Tobin to appear in court Monday evening.

A large patrol gathering at the Watchung Spring Water Company grove on Mountain Avenue featured officers and city county officials, with Roy Martin leading the morning events. Prizes included shoes, a shirt, suit case, cigars, and cash, while medals honored top performers in the relay and baseball feats.
Chairman Charles A. Reed and the Plainfield District Exemption Board prepare for the second examination session to fill a quota of 220 conscripts. Notices sent to 450 registrants require attendance at Evergreen Avenue public school over Monday to Wednesday with two daily sessions at 9 AM and 2 PM. An extra session was held yesterday for exemptions or discharges. claims will be reviewed thoroughly. Many applications reveal misunderstandings of what constitutes support for exemption, including questions about a wife’s income. Recalled men at Police Headquarters were classified as Rejected Physically Deficient, Discharge Dependent Wives, or Claim Exemption Aliens, with several not appearing or challenged. Continuous scrutiny will determine which discharge claims hold.
Plainfield women and former settlers are listed as Red Cross volunteers for service in France with several new additions. Olga Anderson, Mary Powers, and Alyse Stryker join earlier enrollees. Miss Anderson, a Bermuda native, trained at Mutterberg Hospital. Josephine Hughes, long with Muhlenberg Hospital, now serves as Red Cross supervisor. she aided at Port-Chtadwaar, which sailed but collided with Panama, forcing troops and Post-Graduate unit back to New York awaiting orders.
At William Fraisted's request the American Red Cross calls on nearby chapters to prepare thousands of surgical dressings for battleships and destroyers. Plainfield and other chapters supply ships by state, with certificates issued to women trained in Red Cross dressings. Dressings shipped from bases to New York Hash Terminal for delivery to ships.
