The Plainhela district’s exemption board today raised the quota to 220 conscripts from Trefiton amid exam failures. Chairman Charles A. Reed and Dr F. W. Wescott led 366 men through examinations with 183 previously called and new panels to follow. The process involved many volunteers and local officials to manage affidavits, notifications, and staffing for the examinations.
The document lists numerous individuals by full or partial names including Harry E Bronston George Trifilidis John Davigo William J Arthur L Wiltix Stretton John Pocosh Stanley L Banner Mareld Washington James J Li Merbert Bartlan Brest Thelin Ralph Dilivro Mamchells John PF Carey Jr John Petrorcione Cael Lundstrom Bradford Willard Hoagland and others. The scattered OCR reads provide no context beyond a roster of people.
A Maxwell car completed a high speed jump over a trestle on Norwood and Mountain avenues. Experts from Vic Maxwell and Welter directed the test for M and L Alto Bales Co. West Front street. The car reached 40 to 50 mph before impact. 21 feather nets stopped it with little damage. Spectators, auto enthusiasts, and orders placed after the display. P W Gibbs piloted the car during the run.

Dr David G Atwood of Ninth Street Plainfield, a well known dentist, was notified by the War Department on Tuesday that he has been commissioned as first lieutenant in the Center verve Corps. He awaits further orders on active service while remaining at his Plainfield practice.
The Baird Manufacturing Co. at 801 East Pourty Feet plans to leave Plainfield in the near future. The exact abandonment date is unknown. The firm has operated in Plainfield about twelve years and employs a number of workers.
The Somerset county district draft board conducted a physical examination at the Somerville courthouse. Ninety two of 104 notified men appeared. twenty eight from the borough were examined and twenty two passed physically. Some filed exemptions, to be announced later. The district board and examiners included Dr. J. Hervey Buchanan, Dr. A. L. Stillwell, Dr. Charles Halsted, and county physician Dr. William H. Ong.
Company K leaves Red Bank for New Brunswick as Captain Charles m leads the Second Regiment which will mobilize in Brunswick today. Officers expect a week to prepare the craft and start the journey after a farewell service at the Methodist church.
An Aero Corporation employee group plans a large outing for hundreds from Plattefield to Bear Mountain on August 18. The Orient steamer will depart from Communntpan terminal at 1 29 pm and return about 1 40 am. Tickets cost 100 for adults and 50 cents for children. The event features an on board orchestra, professional singing, choruses, and a baby contest with a prize. At Bear Mountain, excursions will continue at Palisades Park with games and prizes. The organizing committee includes Thomas J. Helly chair, William Woodru, James Scott, George T. Meyer, and Daniel Frinhec.
Charles W. Tallman, longtime borough resident and former proprietor of a grocery and car service, died at home after a long illness at about sixty. He lived near Third Street and Muhlenberg in Newark and operated in Plainfield or North Plainfield. His widow survives, and funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
