News from Boston reports Fem-thievity and Mach con strongholds affecting Plainfield with two intel councils in Plainfield Mt Se. WG Wright Srgent and Gresabrock No 1775 lead Charing F Mehrenbeck. Membership stands at 215 of 450. Warefeld Council shows 214. Grosnbrook drops to 137, chartering on December 10.
A noon blaze on South Becond Street near Muh MMEE Wace West End threatened extensive damage to Temple and nearby storage buildings. Firefighters cut lines, checked flames, and prevented spread to railroad trestle and commercial mills as winds fanned embers.
City baseball teams prepare for the season with open practice games next week as managers finalize rosters and discuss league race plans. Officials will review schedules and prepare for the start of play.
W Ransome commands the Home Defense League unit with a new plan. The corps is organized into squads with nightly drills at the High School gym, and weekly practice joins. Mayor approves enrollment near 50 as the drive grows under Robert Rushmore 45 of the automobile brigade.

At a regular meeting the Dover Elks committee led by Exalted Ruler Franciez outlined plans for a May 7 road trip to Plainfield. About 180 Plainfielders are hoped to join the junket with 35 members on a motor parade and a five hour minstrel or mystery production delegation from Plainfield.
The Y M C A at Piotow field branch hosts its annual circus in the gymnasium of the station building on Fast street tomorrow night. Men and boys have worked weeks to meet last year's standard. special acts are planned outside the legitimate circus, including a contortionist. Tickets are held by members and may be obtained immediately before the performance.
Walter Levi Hetfeld a Plainfield jurist known for service on the county court died after a two year illness. Born 1856 he studied law with William L. Maxton and was a respected member of the Plainfield Bar Association. The funeral featured clergy from the First Methodist and First Baptist churches with a graveside service in Evergreen Cemetery.
At a meeting of St Marys T A B Boe to be held in West Fourth street tonight plans are made for the forty fifth anniversary observance on May 20. A monster banquet in T A B Hall on May 21 is likely with five hundred diners and speakers of state and national prominence. Monsignor Coty of St Parish Newark has signified intent to attend and organ the Plainfield T A B Society in 1872. John Barry and John Walsh are the surviving charter members. The society, strong and active, has about 232 members and a well equipped building on West Fourth street where about 100 attend nightly. Joseph T McCue will likely be elected president for the coming year.
Mayor Leighton plans to mobilize thirty four firemen to assist the department amid the trouble with Germany. The men will be notified to report to their captains at respective houses and await further orders from the Mayor and Fire Committee.
Mrs Joseph A Haynes long time city resident recently living with her daughter Mrs Frank Palmer of Fanwood underwent an operation at Muhlenberg Hospital eleven days ago resulting in amputation of her right leg due to worsening condition. Surgeons Dr Hellees and Dr Endicott performed the procedure and the patient is reported to be resting comfortably.
Plainfield records indicate changes in marriage licenses after Lent with higher numbers of certificates issued. Harriet Mattison, registrar of vital statistics, said the rise does not indicate people attempting military service or neglect.
Warren Ackerman and Reginald Rowland lead Plainfielders in raising funds to construct a fast submarine chaser for WWI service. Over half of the $23,000 goal has been collected with several $1,000 donations. The shipyard build is underway with Ackerman, Rowland, Thomas Fraser, Oresham Sharp, Jack Ceuninly and others slated for crew roles. The vessel will patrol the New England coast and serve as a warning and defense against German submarines once completed.
Company K soldiers continue guard duty near a large government supervised uniform factory in New Jersey. They report good health despite monotony as they watch 16 000 uniforms produced daily. Captain Peterson works on a rotation plan to reduce manpower per detail while First Sergeant Apgar briefly took leave to fish.
Plainfield marked Wake Up America Day with a citywide bell ringing and patriotic exercises in schools. Mayor Calkins issued a proclamation as Boy Scouts paraded with flags and farm tools, while Lone Fellow's Paul Revere poem was read at morning programs and shown in local theaters.
