Dr and Mrs C B Thomas begin a Mes Lengger era travelogue detailing their post war voyage to Europe aboard the S S Rotterdam. The narrative captures red tape at embarkation, crossing to Plymouth Harbor, and early impressions of crew passengers and arrival procedures.
Charles L. Mendenhall and family stay in Clear Water Florida and request their Messenger address change. He notes political trends are not entirely to his liking but that many Republicans are present, mostly from the North, and says he is for the whole Republican ticket.
The C E S unit holds a regular meeting tonight at 8 o clock with refreshments and entertainment planned following the session.
Indiana Republicans prepare for Senator Harding to speak at Tomlinson Hall and the Murat theatre on October 14 along with Watson and Warren T. McCray. Delegations from multiple districts travel to attend, with Harding arriving from the east at 12 19. The Terre Haute stop runs about an hour and three quarters, enabling travel within 50 miles for many supporters.
At the Friends church the Woman's Club installed officers led by retiring president Mrs. O W Negus. New president is Mrs. Alice Charles with other officers and new Mothers Mothers Mothers Department members announced. A Three Arts program featured DeKoven biography and musical numbers by local artists followed by light refreshments.
The bridge west of town over White Lick creek was closed at the start of the week for repairs. State contract awarded to D. Jenkins of Terre Haute includes new foundations for supports. Estimated cost $13,000. Traffic delays expected for about a month.
A county meeting of Home Economics classes will be held at the courthouse in Danville on Saturday October 16. The program includes opening remarks by Mrs. W F Franklin music business Junior Home Economics Work in Hendricks County Miss Adelle Davis Clothes for Women demonstration Miss Nelle Framingham Purdue University. Afternoon program opens with Mrs. L Vannice Cultural Value of Home Economics Mrs Jonathan Rigdon The Home Maker as a Business Manager Mary L Mathews Purdue University.
Plainfield High School reports a lively week with a Junior High visit by Mr. Stevenson and a Riley program on October t h. Freshman entertained Sophomores at a Dessie Duffey party. P. H. S. defeated Pittsboro 18 to 10 in Friday’s opener with strong defense. Upcoming game vs Valley Mills amid town support and thanks to Pittsvoro Plainfield fans.
The Hendricks County girls clubs plan a Saturday meeting on October 16 at the Danville court house. The program includes opening remarks by Miss Adelle Davis duet by LeNora Marting and Alice McCaun, a pep session with Miss Grace King, Purdue University, and a noon music reading demonstration by Nelle Framingham from Purdue University.
Co E Kelley of the Peoniee Bank at Clayton organizes a private bank at Bridgeport with capitalization of 10000 dollars. Promoters include Harry Hobbs and the Hoffman brothers. A home for the bank will be erected soon.
Mrs A P W Bridges will host the Friday Club at her Danville residence tomorrow Friday, inviting members to gather in the home setting for the discussion and social time.
The Home Economics Department opened its new club year with a meeting at Mrs A S Miles residence Friday afternoon. Mrs M S Gadewell spoke on Mineral Matter Use Value and Kinds, and Mrs H R Briner discussed Vegetables and Salads leading a round table on Salads. Bon Bon Specials Nabiscos and grape juice were served as members noted bright hopes for the year.
The Three Arts Department will meet at the library on October 23 to discuss upcoming programs and organize events for the season. Members are urged to attend and contribute ideas.
The formal opening of the Washington Township Public Library, set for October 15, is postponed to October 20. Rev. Mary Harrold will speak, Miss Jackson will provide music, and after the program a Boy Scouts versus Farmers Federation basketball game will be played. Supper will be served by the Civic Club.
The Home Economics Department and the Union Home Economics Class receive a special invitation to attend the county meeting next Saturday.
Mrs Mary Simmons age sixty five wife of William H Simmons died Sunday morning from liver cancer after a months long illness and a six week prior operation. She spent most of her life in the community and was held in high esteem. Survived by husband daughter Ruth and two children Eugene deceased, sister Mrs William Nichols brother W E Johnson five nieces including Hattie Carey BE M Wilhite Frank Stanton T S Dock and Ruth Foote. Funeral from home Tuesday afternoon conducted by Rev Thomas R Brown with burial Maple Hill cemetery.
Henry Hall age 27 son of Mr and Mrs John W Hall of Clayton died of pneumonia after a gas attack in France August 17 1918. He returned to Clayton after six years away including California and China before enlisting. He served mainly with the 30th Infantry and died at a Red Cross hospital from pneumonia. remembered as a gold star in Hendricks County’s service flag.
The Guernsey Calf Club invites youths aged ten to eighteen to own and care for pure bred Guernsey heifer calves. About twenty five applicants have joined, with fifteen calves ordered from eastern quarantine yards. Members must be responsible to feed and care for dairy calves and participate in a three year progression ending in a calf show. Keep watch for further father information in the Messenger next week.
Alva Stanley has purchased the hardware stock of T. H. Barnes and Sam and plans to establish a local hardware business in the near future.
