Case in North Plainfield verdict for $850 awarded

The suit of Margaret Falconer and others against David Y Moore and others, to recover $200, was tried before Justice Sperry and a jury in North Plainfield yesterday. The Courier report notes the verdict of $850 for the plaintiffs. Counselor W A Edington appeared for the complainants.

Runaway Wagon Injures Nelson Van Winkle on West Fifth Street

A wagon drawn by a frightened horse ran away on West Fifth Street near Arlington Avenue between twelve and one this afternoon. Nelson Van Winkle of the Coffee Roasting Association was thrown from the wagon near the High School Building and received slight cuts and bruises. The wagon overturned on the sidewalk in front of former councilman B. P. Gorrell’s home and the horse was later captured after a long chase.

Salvation Army Meetings Move to West Front Street

The Salvation Army announces future services in the old Council rooms at 42 West Front Street with public meetings daily except Monday. Ensign Dunham and Captain Williams from New York will attend to lead a great meeting with a Sunday morning at 11 am and a 3 pm and 7:45 pm evening schedule. A holiness session, family gathering, and salvation meeting are planned with an open invitation.

Firemen from Box 34 responded to a blaze on the roof of Patrick Gavin's two story dwelling at West Third Street. Discovered around noon today, the flames were quickly extinguished with limited damage.

Temperance in the Synod Endorses Last Legislature Arraignment

At the New Jersey Presbyterian Synod in Long Branch Rev. W Honeyman led the Permanent Committee on Temperance in presenting a critical arraignment of the last Legislature. The report claims eleven pro temperance bills passed in favor of liquor interests, cites the County Excise Law as a major moral setback, and urges widespread distribution of the minutes and leaflets to churches statewide.

Daily Press editors plead not guilty to libel

The Daily Press editor and publishers appeared before Judge Mc Cormick in Union County Court Elizabeth to answer libel charges from Joseph B. Miller owner of The Elkwood They pled Not Guilty and sought a speedy trial. The case was deferred to the next term with trial on the third Tuesday in January Bond set at 500 for each defendant.

Boys' Club scroll-rowing class open to 30 members

Members wishing to join the scroll-rowing class must hand their names to the Superintendent promptly. The class is limited to thirty with five boys allowed one evening per week. An entertainment is planned next Monday at 7 p.m. featuring instrumental and vocal music and a short talk by Mr. E C Pease of North Plainfield. Both boys and parents are invited to all entertainments.

Water supply workers tear up Somerset street near The Courier office to tap mains for The Courier. Early next week a Parabolic water motor will power Plainfield’s water works press to speed Courier print runs. W H Rogers of Central avenue is Plainfield agent for this motor.
