Charles Potter of the Seventh Day Baptist Church orders a novel bell system to be used in the church. The bells, supplied by the National Tubular Bell Company of Methven, Maine, mimic organ pipes and allow full chime sets as needed. Potter and George Babcock conceived the idea after seeing similar bells in Vienna and Berlin in 1888. The bells are to be completed and shipped to the city in about six weeks.
