A garbled page shows scattered items including misread names and stray quotes. It references English Premier remarks, the Cologne Gazette case, Brooklyn politics, Yale military tactics professor Totten predicting Judgment Day, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde themes, and a sale of Holstein cattle at Woodlawn with notable provenance. The mix reads like a late 19th century miscellany column with varied topics and names.
A detailed note on the Woodlawn herd and related dairy cattle lines highlights cows like Empire and Hilda’s Empire, listing milk yields and lineage. It praises breeding focus over large yields, notes Hilda’s Empire winning at the New York Dairy Fair, and mentions other prominent herds and owners in New Jersey. The piece shifts to Miss Julia E Bulkley, Plainfield’s public school superintendent, being named dean at Chicago University’s Woman’s College, outlining her career and teaching philosophy. It ends with brief notices of a First Baptist Church lecture by Prof Walker and a Knights of Pythias meeting in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
Joseph Proctor born May 7 1814 in Marlboro Massachusetts son of Nicholas Proctor and Lucy Bond. The veteran actor is praised for vitality temperament and gentleness with colleagues. He is described as tall straight and musical in voice with a broad memory and humor and a devoted family.
A dubious city page repeats a sensational rumor about Jay Gould planning to buy Chapultepec Castle in Mexico for seven million dollars. The tale links Gould to Monte Cristo style plots and romance, citing a Wall Street post as source, with no verified details.
fragmented OCR reads of a court scene show a man named O'Brien arguing with a judge about a suspended fine related to his wife. officers or observers are not clear, but the dialogue hints at an unusual exchange and a potential plea or settlement.
The passage notes Mra Garrett Pawcett, widow of a Polish independence figure, and mentions Polish women will don black this year to mark the centenary. It also briefly references Mme Sealeh and Blanche Roosevelt in Paris, plus anecdotes about matinee routines and social comment on women writers.
A fragmentary collection of aphorisms notes that excessive effort yields little, a foolish person overestimates himself, and true character is shown by doing good without seeking credit for it. The lines suggest moral reflections on effort vanity and integrity.
