Fragmentary forecast notes slightly warmer conditions with southerly winds, generally fair skies. Another line suggests Wednesday will be largely fair with mild temperatures, but text is incomplete.
A patchwork of church gatherings, court notes, and community updates from Elizabeth. The Trinity Reformed Church prayer service, Easter Lodge activities, and a concert at Music Hall are listed alongside court decisions, deaths, funerals, and city events.
A major wreck occurred on the New York Central Railroad between West Cranford around one o clock. The crash delayed travel for hours as some cars caught fire and were destroyed. Coal piles scattered the track and the line reopened for passengers by about one o clock the morning. Only the engineer and a foreman on the freight train were injured. the engineer was wounded and the foreman hurt on the leg.
Council members discussed draining Liberty street amid ongoing drainage issues. Frazee urged immediate action while noting surface drainage is inadequate without a dedicated sewer, which would require substantial funds. The problem has recurred for years and should be addressed as soon as possible.
On complaint by Sergeant Lynch Matthew Kilpatrick of West Sixth Street was arraigned before City Judge Codington last evening charged with selling beer on Monday. He pleaded not guilty and was held in bond of 640 for trial next Monday morning. Martin Geeghan furnished bond. Kilpatrick was released.
The Central New Jersey Herald of Elizabeth changes hands as William McKean leaves. Biter Todd of Vineland takes over after formerly running the National Republican in Washington. The Plainfield Choral Society held a rehearsal at the Y M C A rooms that evening.
Mayer Gilbert presents a comprehensive message to the Common Council of Plainfield as W. Runyon is elected City Clerk and Stephen A. Ginna becomes President. Committees are named, liquor ordinance amendments discussed, street work authorized, and reports referred to appropriate boards. Council adjourns to continue business next week.
In a church quarrel at Mt Olive Baptist Church, a Christmas drill and collected coal gifts sparked tempers. A pile of coal was purchased for the church while a pastor condemned the source from a dancing event, causing dispute within the congregation over how to use the funds and offerings.
The first meeting of the City Board of Federation was held in the High School building with all members present. Officers elected include President Geo J Babcock and Secretary Edward J Finoh, with the Ex-President JJ Kirkner in attendance. A large crowd gathered in the Council Chamber lobby to meet the new council and witness the proceedings.
