The death of John W. Laing on New Year’s Day will be marked by a funeral from Laing’s Hotel on West Front Street tomorrow at 2:30 PM. Margaret Coonsy at No 72 West Third Street died from peritonitis after seven days of illness. May Tomlinson, daughter of Dr and Mrs Tomlinson, plans a mid January trip to Ban A Teta, staying with Mrs Chambertin and Mrs Gillette. Deceased whose funeral will be from St Mary’s Church with high mass tomorrow morning. Fred E. Vernall of the County Standard to travel to San Francisco as a delegate to the National Convention of Prva Clute. Edgar B. Pearsall to oversee editorial duties in his absence. An article by F Kinsman on December 30, 1891 discusses practical electric power and a social gathering with dancing and games at Fred Deap’s residence.
A major blaze swept through Westfield early in the morning, destroying several frame structures on Prospect and Broad streets. Firefighters from Westfield and aid from Elizabeth and Plainfield battled high winds and water shortages. Berates of property and a new printing press were heavily damaged. Among the losses were Ferris hardware, Potter cigars, Lightfoot paints, and Arcanum Hall, with many insured and others uninsured.
