Kipling, Blaine, and cotton ties in a changing Tariff age
The piece notes Kipling’s softened stance and a proposed American marriage, a dinner for Blaine, and plays on the navy. It highlights Chicago’s coal smoke problem, a theft in Geneva, a heartfelt obituary for Rev. Rouxsay, and praises McKinley tariff shifts that boosted U.S. cotton tie production, reducing imports and benefiting American mills and planters.
