State Board of Health reports rise in deaths and fall in births

Vital statistics show state wide deaths rose to 28,840 while births fell to 28,582 and marriages totaled 15,564, down from 15,305. Camden led in marriages with 4,104 as Philadelphia couples cross into the state to evade city license laws.

Bethel Chapel Benefit Concert and Choral Society Plans

Lawrence Myers lies ill at his East Front street home. A grand concert for Bethel Chapel will be held Thursday with Miss F Nelson performing A Dream of all Things Beautiful. The Choral Society opens Monday December 24 with the Messiah oratorio featuring Mrs C Ford soprano from Cleveland, Miss Emily Winant contralto, W R K Dennison tenor, and Carl Dull bass.

Philharmonic Opens Season With De Vere Soloist

The New York Philharmonic Club presents its first subscription concert at the Casino on Tuesday evening. Vocal soloist Miss Clementine De Vere will perform. All tickets for the series are sold. Subscribers should present orders at Reynolds Pharmacy this week to collect tickets.

City Council Meeting Endorses Hayes Extension Aerial Truck

The Plainfield City Council, with most members present, held a brief session praising a plan to replace the fire department’s old truck. A special committee reviewed Brooklyn and New York operations and recommended a Hayes Extension Aerial Truck with a 70 foot ladder at a delivered cost of 3000 dollars. Ackerman supported timely procurement, calling the current truck a disgrace and unsafe.

First Assembly at Union County Country Club

The season opener Assembly was held at the Casino of the Union County Country Club with eighty five guests in attendance. Hosts Mrs Charles E Brooks Mrs W T Kaufman and Mrs James Parker Mason welcomed attendees while Elliott of New York provided music and Chef Holmes supervised supper. Notables included Mr and Mrs W E Stewart Mr and Mrs J P Mason Mr and Mrs C E Brooks Mr and Mrs W T Kaufman Mrs Huntington and many others. The next Assembly is scheduled for New Year night with subsequent dates January 18 and February 15.

Hurrah for the Crescents Defeat Westfield in Bowling

The Crescent League bowling team beat Westfield Athletic Club by forty five pins on home alleys. Davis led with 198, as Crescents totalled 805 to Westfield 759. Next match set for February 18 at Westfield.

Bicycle Thief Leaves Wheel at Street Corner

Special Officer Moran on East Front street near Berekimann Street found a man with a bicycle in the gutter. The man fled toward the gravel pits leaving the bicycle behind at the scene. The wheel, described as a good one, awaits its owner at the station house.

Maintivk Council Elects Officers and Approves Bonds

Maintivk Council No. 711 Royal Arch Cam Society chose officers including Regent Augustus Kleinecke Viet Regent Charles Van Winkle and Treasurer Thomas Bartindale. City Treasurer bond for 15000 was presented and referred to Finance. Additional bills and salaries were approved for street work and fire department fund payments.

Street Light Investigation Committee Reorganization

At the council meeting Mr Spangenberg urged adding Mr Ackerman to the street light investigation committee. Ackerman noted resignations from prior meetings and did not want to act alone. President Smith said the committee stands and is working. Ackerman consented to join.
