Fair, stationary temperatures with southwesterly winds. For Tuesday expect increasing cloudiness with light rain.
A collage of short items reports on a youth fined for intoxication, baptisms at Park Avenue Baptist, coal sale offers, YMCA classes, police duty shifts, sermons on temperance, dances, lumber yard fire photos, and a parade of community notices from Westfield and Plainfield.
An incipient blaze started in a show window at Jules Stahl's candy store on Somerset Street North Ulairfiell this morning. The fire, caused by cotton batting used in decorating a candy ship, was extinguished with considerable effort. Stahl suffered burns to his hands but no major damage occurred.
James J. Dyer, once a city machinist and champion heavyweight of the Metropolitan Association of the American Athletic Union, trains for a special bout at the Pasteur Athletic Club tournament in Elizabeth. He will face Edward Nichols who is described as a sturdy challenger, requiring Dyer to be in peak condition.
Netherwood butcher James Guttridge endures repeated tramp visits at his home and shop for clothes food and money. They also trespass to milk his cows, prompting him to procure a full-grown mastiff to better handle the nuisance.
The fair and supper under the auspices of the Ladies' Christian Work Society closed Saturday evening after opening Thursday in Schepflin's block. It was a pronounced success financially and in other respects, with credit due to the committee of ladies in charge.
The Somerset County report shows total expenses of 45 384 54 with major items in Courts 6 649 47 and Per diem and Salaries 9 527 17. Also noted are a new Sefer Torah dedication at Congregation Beth Tefillah Isha Yendel and a Rahway Athletic Association meeting about league plans.

A group at the Central Hotel on a Saturday evening watched a colored man wager five dollars that he could lift over 400 pounds. He laid the money on the bar, a bystander took the bill and left. Police said they could act only if a formal complaint was filed.

An upholsterer Ficke of West Third street reportedly injured a hand by jumping from a moving ruin near Madison avenue Friday night.
