John Silvers, 25, ended his life with a pistol in his room near McMinnville after asking a friend how to use a gun. He demonstrated the act, cocked the weapon, and pressed the muzzle to his chest in a fatal choice.
A mysterious blaze destroyed the Oliver Iron and Steel Company machine shop on Muriel street Southside last evening causing an $80 000 loss. The three story brick block from South Tenth to South Eleventh housed machine blacksmith hinge engine room and offices. The engine room at the western end was the origin of the fire. About two thirds of the loss was covered by insurance and rebuilding will commence at once.
St Louis reports a tangled case in which Captain D P Slattery is said to be the victim of a conspiracy. Police plan to rearrest Klosterman and his wife Sallie Klosterman after a day of shifting testimony. W H Horn links Slattery to a morning spree through saloons before midnight, with alleged paramours, a looted sum, and a staged raid linking Klosterman's apartments to the assault. Probing police theory states Slattery was followed, coerced with liquor, robbed of diamonds and cash, then hauled upstairs amid a retold scandal about the raid.
A massive blaze gutted the old brick factory, sparked by gas lines and oil in the engine room. Fire crews battled to control the flames as winds pushed the conflagration across the building, with losses estimated around 30000 dollars and insurance claims mounting.

Normandie had just arrived on La Champagne.
