Armor Plates Tested for Government Use by Carnegie Phipps
Carnegie Phipps & Co have produced five nickel steel armor plates for testing at Annapolis. The 3 inch thick, 6 by 6 foot plates weigh 5 400 pounds each, with two steel and three nickel steel. If tests with a six pounder Hotchkiss gun prove inadequate, further tests up to 11 inch thickness will follow. Nickel steel shows improved quality in tests, but government adoption hinges on cost and patent considerations.
