He was captured after being identified by a betrayed accomplice and sentenced to life at the galleys, but since a prior escape ordeal he has not attracted notice until now.
A mass of bones found under an old shed on the Beck farm reveals a nine year old murder mystery. The killer Perley Beck died a year ago after allegedly terrorizing the victim's grave for eight years. Calvin Beck vanished in Hopkinton on January 1 2 and was never seen again. Authorities had suspected Perley, who was later found dead in his castle house. Mrs. Calvin Beck burned to death, believed killed by Perley.
Secretary Tracy plans to dispatch four warships to the seal islands to curb sealing under an agreement with Sir Julian Pauncefote. Earlier only two ships were to be sent to accompany the Rush, Corwin, and Alert, but four will proceed north. Names of two extra vessels remain to be announced.
