Homestead hearing tracks cost of steel and Pinkerton role

The hearing coverage details questions on sliding wage scales at Homestead, Frick and Carnegie officials testifying on billet prices and production costs. Sheriff McCleary and witnesses describe Pinkerton involvement, guard deployments, and disputes over wages, mortgages, and labor tactics amid a growing tariff debate.

Wage details emerge in Homestead mill dispute

Mr O Donnell, a heater in the 119 inch plate mill, said his monthly wages were about $144. He warned that a pro scale lowering billet prices to $22 would cut his pay by 12 percent. He refused to answer a question about alleged barge arson by oil on the water. A recess was taken at 1 40 PM until 4 PM.
