Workers Await Orders From Homestead Agents
Men hired by August Geisler and Emil Dorner to travel to Homestead remained in town awaiting instructions. Ten to twelve African American workers were seen near Dorner’s home, telling reporters they expected to depart for Howettee. Agents Abbott, Geisler, and Dorner offered little information as to plans. Some workers claimed they would not work in the mill, calling themselves loungers getting board and pay. Only two of the men were peers and two spoke English. The Homestead returnees were reported as intimidated and unlikely to return without guaranteed protection.
