A Washington telegram reports Secretary Blaine's serious ill health and possible permanent withdrawal from office. His son Walker acts de facto Secretary, with Blaine's condition described as a stroke-like illness requiring prolonged rest.
Special Telegram reports Ex Senator Sabin of Minnesota involved with a gold mining venture near the Potomac River above Alexandria. The firm, organized by Michigan men and including a new Saginaw district congressman, bought land beside Senator Sawyer to start operations. A manager returned with quartz samples showing large free gold, claimed found on the company property. Also Tracy rules Navy per diem staff receive 30 days paid leave annually.
The Treasury Secretary ruled that immigrants arriving under conditions like seven English arrivals on the Obdam cannot land under the alien contract labor law. An English agency in London arranged transport with agents in Rotterdam and Seguin Texas to procure work and require acceptance of unemployment offers. John L. Sullivan was arrested in Nashville on a prize fighting charge after a dramatic scene aboard the Cannon Ball train. Officers wrestled him from a sleeper car. he was released on a habeas corpus writ as crowds cheered and Governor Lowry vowed pursuit.
From Coloma MS July 11 Kilrain and companions arrive in Seymour from St Louis on the Ohio and Mississippi road. Sullivan’s arrest rumors spread provoking a swift move to Columbus then toward Cincinnati with a plan to elude authorities. They stay briefly at Bissell Hotel and flee by carriage toward Kentucky as Sheriff and posse pursue near Shelbyville.
Dispatches describe Kilrain party tracking Louisville to Baltimore with detectives boarding trains in Lawrenceburg and Charleston West Virginia. Despite search of cars and attendants, Kilrain was not found as crowds jeered. Kilrain threatened vengeance, saying if Sullivan is captured they face a term in the pen. If Baltimore is reached he may head for England.
Governor Foraker received a telegram from Governor Lowry reporting Sullivan's habeas corpus release at Nashville and his Northward approach. Foraker ordered arrest if he reaches Cincinnati and coordinated with officials in Cincinnati Indianapolis and Louisville to intercept. The Little Miami was to be searched for the Kilrain party at midnight.
Governor Taylor telegraphed Governor Lowry that Sullivan was released on a writ of habeas corpus. Lowry began steps to rearrest him in Nashville and will pursue all resources. Efforts also continue to apprehend the other implicated figure amid a disgraceful affair.
Charleston, S.C. experienced a slight earthquake shock at 9 47 pm lasting about three seconds. The tremor moved north to south with vibratory motion and a faint noise, causing minor alarm in the stricken city.
