Across the East a massive storm lashed cities from Pittsburgh to New England. Sleet and rain caused wires to freeze and break, halting telegraph service nationwide except for sparse lines. Flood fears rose along the Susquehanna, with Wilkes-Barre and Plymouth reporting rising waters and ice jams threatening homes and streets.
Water floods streets and houses from Fort Hunter to Amsterdam as ice gorges tighten on Schoharie Creek and the Susquehron bridge area. Boats ferry residents while rapid rises threaten further property losses. New England floods worsen despite ongoing efforts to obtain details.
A severe winter storm hit New York from 11 p.m. to noon, dropping six inches of wet snow that brought down telegraph and electric poles, shattered wires and blocks streets. Saint Laks January 25 Lucy Decker Young eighth wife of Brigham Young is dead. Seven wives remain including Assiia Felon ibehteehese. The report notes her death amid the Bradam Young household and lists surviving spouses.

San Francisco January 25 Frank Curtin purser of the steamer Umatilla shot himself in his stateroom after a visit with a woman at the dock. He died shortly after at receiving hospital. The woman accompanied him to the ship and departed after the lapse of about twenty minutes. Curtin had been closely linked to a Victoria bound romance, believed to involve Mrs A Raymond, with no clear motive found in his effects.
Prof James T Hatfield of Northwestern University Evanston has been named to the Organizing Committee of the Ninth International Congress of Orientalism to be held in London next September This honor follows his Sanscrit grammar published in 1884 and essays for the Journal of American Orientalists Society His prior attendance at the Eighth Congress in Stockholm Kristiania is noted with royal patronage by Sweden’s king.
William Mosgrove, mayor of Rock Springs, died after an 11 o clock return from a deer hunt with Charles Williams. They traveled 30 miles in severe mountain climate last Thursday and Mosgrove succumbed to exposure by 4 o clock that afternoon, the collapse attributed to the harsh journey and lingering aftereffects. The account notes his long tenure and links to the American House, the pioneer hotel of the town.
A man calling himself John Stevens, likely S A Shaw, wanted for James Rodgers murder in Illinois last summer, was found in a cave near Greenbrier White Sulphur Springs. He lived there since September, only venturing out at dusk for food, and was captured with a Winchester revolver four knives and other arms and dry goods. He claimed a negro accomplice at Hinton, West Virginia.
Prurta January 25 At four this morning the Hamburg distillery at Pekin burned and was a total loss. The plant valued at eighty five thousand dollars and the warehouse at unknown value. The fire’s cause is not known though fully covered by insurance.
In Stevensville Ontario a Mishio gan Central train struck a carriage carrying Irvin Teal and Farahe Oakewell. Moore was killed and Teal seriously injured. The accident occurred this afternoon, devastating local residents and prompting a police investigation.
