A delegation of Allegheny citizens visited the Postoffice Department to back Belver Avenue merchant John H. Gilleland for Allegheny postmaster. The office appeared practically promised to Gilleland at Colonel Bayne’s solicitation, with the change expected soon. The visitors included W. T. Marsh, John H. Smitley, John R. Murphy, Samu C. Grier and W. S. McKinney.
Dr Edward Walther, a prominent German physician in St Paw, possesses one of four 1804 silver dollar coins minted. The coin, worth about 800, was purchased for 150, with three other known to exist. Walther’s discovery follows long search and deters counterfeit sales.
Secretary Windom reviewed papers on the Pittsburg Surveyorship but did not reveal a decision. A selection may wait until Senator Quay returns from Florida. Bart’s term could end March 21 regardless of confirmation timing.

Richard A. E. Goebler, a Butte Mont. German, captured a bunko man who had robbed him of 1550 dollars. The attack occurred at the Astor House after Goebler tailed Davis from the post office. Goebler flashed a revolver and forced Davis back to the sidewalk until police intervened. Davis was jailed on assault and carrying a pistol without a permit. Goebler faced the court for his improvised arrest.
Telegram from Wilkes-Barre reports Plymouth, Pennsylvania, where a Lithuanian group set a cemetery fire after a crowd led by Martin Wilkes mutilated dead children. Wilkes and twelve followers were arrested, with some released on bail. Bishop O'Hara contemplates excommunication of the Polish faction.

On January 23 Snyder Lockwood piano dealer of Shokan confessed on his supposed deathbed to urging notes and other commercial paper for large sums. He then left for unknown parts as his physician found him missing. A brother in law James Dubois also vanished. rumors connect him to Lockwood’s dealings and suggest he fled toward Canada after boarding a West Shore train.
Harrisburg January 23. Henry Jackson a colored man, recently sentenced to 3 years and 3 months in the Eastern Penitentiary for a horrible crime, died by his own action in his cell. He attempted hanging with blanket strips and then cut his throat, the instrument likely a piece of Jackson’s dread of the penitentiary.
Henry M. Jackson a former paying teller of the sub Treasury who fled to Canada with $10 000 pleaded guilty to embezzlement. Judge Benedict of the United States Circuit Court sentenced him to six years in the Erie County Penitentiary and a $10 000 fine. Jackson may be held six months after his term.
Telegraphs from Nickerson Kansas report Nellie Bly on seventieth day of her journey toward New York. She expects victory or failure within two days and recalls ovations in Albuquerque. Dispatches from Hutchinson Kansas describe her 2:15 PM stop for dinner and a thousand-strong reception at the Santa Fe depot.
A funeral procession at Rosehill ended in tragedy when a Chicago and Northwestern express struck the Payne carriage at the cemetery gate. Frederick and wife were killed, their 9-year-old daughter injured, driver Simon Anderson fatally injured, and a neighbor killed. Fifteen mourners in the rear were unharmed.
Two large plants are being built in Cleveland with only F. B. Squire and David R. Paige publicly named. Rumor says Standard Oil may own the venture as 60 acres are leased, buildings rise, and a salt well is drilled for soda ash used in oil refining and glass making.
