The Plymouth PolandLithuania clash erupts with grave desecration and child remains found. Martin Wilkes released on bail, vow vengeance, and armed Lithuanians pursue Wilkes and followers. The town braces for possible lynching as bodies are reinterred and guards posted at the cemetery.
London and Paris papers report the Count of Paris will skip London after finishing his Lisbon trip and travel to the United States for several months. He is father-in-law of King Carlos of Portugal and has ties to the British court, with plans tied to easing anti-British sentiment in Portugal.
Frank Morgan, a cousin of Senator Morgan, is under arrest in the Cherokee Nation for the kill of Sheriff Johnson of the district. The Morgans led the Downing faction while Johnson supported the Nationalists. During the summer of 1654 Johnson and another man sailed on a boat when two Morgan brothers fled to Fort Smith, refugees from Cherokee lands.
The national convention of the Women s Christian Temperance Union met at Music Hall Cleveland with 10 o clock opening. Mrs Ellen J Phinney chaired and Mrs Ellen J Watson served as secretary as delegates from multiple states signed a membership test and discussed forming a non partisan non sectarian temperance association. A mass meeting followed an afternoon session with speeches and greetings from church and civic leaders.
An announcement from Norristown Pa states the historic Valley Forge Revolutionary Camp site near Chester county will be sold in 190 acres of rolling meadow and wooded hills for private building lots. Residents fear division will prevent preserving the tract as a whole for historical purposes and urge state purchase as a public park or military cemetery, though action awaits next winter.

A committee of the National Afro American League, after a Chicago convention, arrived in Washington to present a petition to President Harrison. They demand federal action to secure Constitutional rights for colored citizens, condemn South’s outrages, call for better education under Blair bill, and seek reform of suffrage, jury trials, and representation.
Special telegram from Boston dated January 22 reports United States vessel Borderer’s First Officer Matthewe recounts Scotland Yard detectives hunting Jack the Ripper as a cattleman theory. He warned the future depends on past events, and several thousand Negroes may depart within ten days amid white indifference. Two carloads reportedly departed.
The New York Presbytery clashed over proposed revision of the Westminster Confession. The Marquis de Leuville stands trial in a case charging inciting a riot at the Princess Theatre over the play The Gold Craze. Testimony from actor Jack Barnes includes insistence he did not parody the Marquis. Prosecution hints at prior trades and a possible conviction that could cost him his mustache and entail a convict’s garb.

Consul General Severance reports the American bark T. L. Sweat, sailing from New York in 1888, struck Susannah reef near Enderby Island after a frantic night, leaving ten men adrift with no food or water. They faced canoes and threats, were stripped and barely saved, then fed by locals after landing on Enderby.
Berlin January 22 The government has ordered an engineer to go to Stettin to survey a great ship canal linking Berlin with the Baltic via the Elbe and existing canals, signaling a major inland waterway project.

F E Paxton reports Washington correspondent accounts from Dakota show widespread distress after crop failures. He cites bankrupt households, cash-only stores, widespread mortgage foreclosures, and livestock sold for as little as three to ten dollars. Families, including women and children, lack necessities and adequate clothing.
A panic of Hebrew residents in a five story brick tenement at 12 Essex Street sent about 100 people spilling into smoke filled halls. They recalled a two year old blaze in which 19 perished as they fled into the freezing air with children clinging to backs and necks. The scene mirrored the prior disaster as dangers lingered in the smoke filled stairwells.
