Leaders from the Constitutional Amendment Association, the Pennsylvania Woman's Christian Temperance Union, the Prohibition party, and local ministers clash over control of the organization. Mrs Willenmyer urges calm while John Cessna wrestles with parliamentary hurdles and contemplates chairing the upcoming executive committee. The gathering ends with no clear plan for tomorrow's permanent leadership as factions vow to press their cause at the convention.
Special telegram from Atlanta reports a cyclone sweeping Banks county at 4 am on February 14. It destroyed homes in Nicholson and the Stevens and Weaver families suffered fatalities and injuries. A Birmingham dispatch notes a cyclone in Bibb county with several dead and many hurt.
A telegram from New York reports Haitian Minister Preston and General Contreras missing amid intrigue over vessels Carondelet and Conserva. They reportedly sailed toward Kingston on the Athos, with emissaries to provoke action by Hippolyte Legitime and to challenge via Haiti’s navy. A warship meeting in Kingston is anticipated.
In Cotemars on February 18 the cross examination of Mrs Church in the divorce suit continued. The testimony detailed that during the marriage the couple spent about 13 000 while Col Church earned only around 200 to 300. The plaintiff admitted some failure to provide clothing though she denies others. The proceedings aim to complete the cross examination tomorrow.
A New York telegram reports Mrs Langtry plans to cancel her next season in the United States including six weeks at the Fifth Avenue Theatre. Producer Eugene Tompkins warned Macbeth would not sustain the run, and Langtry now eyes London starting in September with a long stay before touring England and Australia. She may not return to America next season.
Curcaco February 18 The drive to form the Inter State Commerce Railway Association reaches a climax at a meeting of presidents to morrow President Strong of the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe arrives back from the West and South west with most railroads signing only two major lines remain doubtful Kansas City Ft Scott and Gulf and the Missouri Kansas and Texas Presidents Nettleton and receivers Cross and Eddy hoped to sign but did not the hurdle clouds the prospect of unanimity.
In Albany on February 18 a smallpox scare surrounds the Clinton Liberal Institute at Fort Pisin. After vaccinations, a professor contracted varioloid, triggering quarantine of out of town students and home confinement for others. Rumors spread to Fort Plain as the institute remains shut and the professor is ill.
Anx Amor Michigan February 18 Mrs Friend the Howards and the Halsteads remain in jail. A writ of habeas corpus was obtained for Mrs Friend Sunday morning returnable 10 o clock but adjourned to tomorrow to allow Sugar Company to answer. Detectives from New York arrived to seize the entire party and a strong legal effort will test the pa. Writs will be sought in all cases. The arrests are accepted calmly and they vow not to fear conviction.
A gang broke into H. & A. Gebrartz at 173 Halsey Street Newark during the morning and stole about 3000 dollars worth of watches and jewelry. They forced the rear alley entry and opened the safe, taking 100 customer watches 50 gold and 10 silver watches and a large stock of jewelry.
Commissioner of Buildings inspected the Owens building at Adams and Dearborn where a tile floor section 20 by 6 feet gave way while a heavy tank was raised last Saturday. The collapse caused no major structural injury and the total damage is estimated at 800 dollars.
Mrs Josie Gurley in the county jail confessed her husband was guilty of abducting Annie Redmond. She named a supposed lure by Mrs Annie Allen and claimed Maggie Gordon was a myth. Annie Allen has been arrested amid Gurley’s critical illness as the reward pool reaches $1000.
Early dawn blast at the Central Hotel in Hartford Connecticut kills at least one man and leaves up to nineteen still missing. Fifty people were in the hotel. sixteen bodies recovered and ten injured. A 16 horsepower boiler in the basement is blamed. the night engineer was off duty. Authorities, volunteers, and Connecticut National Guard aided rescue and search efforts.
An explosion at a Hartford site caused devastating damage. Listed dead include Dwight H. Buell and George Gaines. injured victims include Helen Leport and Henry Steifel. The blast shattered windows, bent pipes, and sent workers fleeing as authorities investigate possible arson by Gaines.
A letter from President Cleveland to John Z. White, secretary of the American Tariff Reform League, is expected to spark a sensational debate at the tariff conference in Cuscaco. New York February 18. The Chinese at Mott Street were told by Rev Dr Wong Jack San acting priest of the Joss temple that there is no caste among the faithful. He said the temple welcomes any worshiper, regardless of religious differences, and offers priestly aid at no cost.
A Navy Department telegram states the Vandalia arrived at Honolulu and would sail to Apia on the 7th. Rear Admiral Belknap commands Mare Island Navy Yard, California. The Galena with Rear Admiral Gherardi aboard sailed from Key West for Port au Prince, Hayti, with all well aboard.
In Chicago on February 18 three men were harmed in separate incidents within 12 hours. One man was stabbed fatally during a window peep incident, another man named George Stevens died from a knife wound, and Luther Rey, a Black man, was shot to death during a craps fight. Scott Walker was arrested in connection with the events.
Indiana Republicans condemn General Harrison's Cabinet list as a shamble along Blaine lines. In Brooklyn Supreme Court Amelia Lio, fifteen, seeks to annul her marriage to Vincenzo Perfetto on grounds of underage status and coercion. She alleges the ceremony occurred at City Hall, New York, with Mayor Hewitt officiating in August 1888, under threats and without her mother’s knowledge or consent. Justice Pratt referred the case to referee Levi A. Fuller.
