A Look at Coredom and the Coke Region Workers
A 19th century dispatch notes coke strike tensions between workers and operators. It examines labor leadership, company housing, rents, and garden aids, highlighting Morewood and Bessemer housing under Southwest Coal and Coke and Painter plants. It cites costs, occupancy, and coal provisions with UMWA involvement.
Rock on Which They Split in Connellsville Coke Region
The 1889 formation of the United Mine Workers of America aided both operators and workers as coke prices fluctuated from under $1 to $150 per ton. Frick built influence by absorbing failing small companies while labor sought higher wages. Operators oppose leadership gains, while many foreign workers in company towns save and own homes, with funds in banks from $500 to $2,500.

Oil Drilling Outlook in Venango County Promises Patchy Summer
A Telegram from April 20 reports Venango County oil activity cooling with many operators delaying large-scale drills due to low light-territory prices. Pine View near Linesville, led by E. E. Clapp and Kohl Bros, shows potential, while numerous wells progress in Gray Sand districts near Linesville, Salemburg, Oil City, and Wildwood. Notable sites include No. 8 Peeples, Edward Clapp farm, and various farms with yields ranging from a few barrels to over 16 barrels per hour, plus a stranded cable delaying Heideberge work and a fire at the Preston & Swartz rig.
