Piqua High School Holds 55th Commencement Exercises

The 55th annual Piqua High School commencement took place in the high school auditorium on Friday evening June 7 1917 with 46 graduates, the largest class yet. Congressman J Fess delivered the address praising democracy and flag patriotism while the Senior Trio Neva Mote Florence Sachs and Ruth Wilkinson performed.

Piqua Considers Draft Quotas Amid Registration Figures

Piqua registered 1147 young men for military service as Ohio anticipates a 35000 man state quota and a nationwide draft of about 125000 youths. Analysis shows roughly one in five will be called, with 235 needed from Piqua and a prior 125 already in service or volunteering. Whites show higher exemption rates than blacks, a notable shift in the pattern.

Upper Fire Station to Remain Open in Piqua

Safety Director G F Fryling announced to a Press reporter that the Upper fire station on Park avenue will not be closed. A new motor apparatus, due soon, will be stationed at the Upper station to enhance Piqua's fire protection. Fryling cited differing conditions between city sections and noted the station is a nearly new building with no extra expense.

Chicago Youth Arrested on Train With Pistol and Cash

Chartes Pastor, 19, of Chicago, was seized by Officers Henning and Wise after being taken off a west bound train at midnight. A Colt automatic pistol with five shells and $2.77 were found on him. He told Mayor Bell he had traveled the country for three years since his mother’s death and his father’s cruelty. He bought the pistol in Pittsburg yesterday while riding the blind baggage to Chicago. Bail was set at $200, and with no bond he was sent to Frey county jail awaiting a possible army opportunity. James Doyle and George Wilson, both of Springfield Ohio, faced vagancy charges and pleaded guilty, fined $5 each to be worked out on the streets. Grant Lindley of West Park Avenue was arrested for intoxication and fined $5, with payment due by Saturday night.
