The State Dairy and Food Bureau warned that wood alcohol in toilet preparations can cause temporary or permanent blindness. Hair tonics and bath lotions were found to contain wood alcohol, with denatured alcohol also discouraged for body rubs. Absorption through the skin may affect the optic nerve and vision.
In Indianapolis Tomlinson Hall hosted a miners convention where Mother Jones urged unity and condemned fraud while Adolph Germer and Duncan McDonald led a vote to probe expenditures. The six and a half hour debate centered on lavish spending by President White and other officers.
Reporters note that no strike is sought while miners and management seek a workable wage agreement. Talks continue with hopes for amicable settlement and avoided disruption.
Indianapolis January 21. The United States Mine Workers convention is under keen supervision by major financial institutions. A cable from an allied nation urged watchfulness over the potential for an industrial war affecting munition production. President White announced a joint wage scale conference of anthracite operators and miners set for February 10 in New York or Philadelphia.

State Fire Marshall inspectors Albert H. Sterling and John J. Baker, in the city investigating a recent fire, survived a near wreck on the C. H. and D. branch from Dayton to Delphos between Pleasant Hill and Ludlow Falls in Miami county when a truck piece dragged a rail. The coachs’ trucks dropped and rails loosened, leaving several cars on the ties for a quarter mile, terrifying passengers especially the women. The officials arrived in town unsettled by the incident.
