An old narrator recalls a dramatic chicken incident where a stray blow ends a cock's life through a window. Mr Comey comforts, then hands the bird to the narrator. Capt E A Wilson of Orlando writes to Boston Transcript answering readers questions about the Florida velvet bean. He traces its origin to Florida about twenty five years ago when known as The Climber and credits Florida as its original home. He notes international spread after introducing the crop last year and reports a crop grown from seed sent abroad this season.
Report outlines widespread growth of the velvet bean, grown as curiosity in Kew Gardens, with three thousand people in England and all states testing it in America. It yields up to thirty bushels of seed per acre, four tons dry foliage, and serves as stock fodder, soil fertilizer, and seed revenue. Government aided distribution with a carload of seed last July. Velvet bean climbs 50 to 60 feet and covers ground densely. Florida farmers plant ten to eighty acres.
A collage of humorous quotes and fragments from late 19th century newspapers. Bits include a disdainful remark about punishment in St Petersburg, a playful exchange over a poetry volume, a schoolyard mishearing of a song lyric by colored children, and a Civil War bakery scene with a bayonet bearing a loaf.
